Eustis is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is bordered to the north by Venice Beach and to the east by Fort Myers. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in Eustis were Spanish colonists who founded Santo Domingo de la Vera Cruz in 1521. A year later, English settlers arrived with Captain John Smith's expedition during King James I's War (1607-1609). In 1692, English traders discovered sugarcane growing near Eustis and began shipping crops from the island back to England; this led to a sugar industry that continues today. By 1825, some 10% of all American exports came from Eustis. In 1827, Congress passed an act annexing land lying between Collier Key and Biscayne Bay to form Sarasota County; Eustis was given land east of US 1st Avenue in what are now The Villages development and North Miramar development areas. After being annexed by Sarasota County in 1828 it became known as "EUSTIS". A courthouse was built on State Road 7 around 1840 which remain extant today as Pinellas County Courthouse Annex #1 across State Road 7 from which county officials meet when needed or when court proceedings need extra space inside or outside of courthouse complex structure - Palm Harbor Today In 1912 an oil well was drilled offshore just south of where present day City Hall sits; this well failed but left a deep hole behind which leads directly out into open water - City Hall Site Today
