In 1978, The Miami Herald moved its headquarters from Tampa to Eustis and formed a partnership with local businessmen Julius Klein and George Pappas to build what would become one of South Florida's most successful media companies - Gannett Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). Today Gannett operates more than 50 television stations statewide including 13 FOX affiliate stations and 20 ABC affiliate stations throughout all of Florida including three Fox owned-and-operated stations in Tampa Bay; two CW affiliates; five NPR member station outlets across the state; online services such as Gannett Online and eHarmony; print publications like USA Today and LifeZette; extended land holdings that include 25 golf courses across central Florida plus ten waiver courses for players age eighteen or younger]; over $1 billion in assets (market value) as of September 2014 . Eustis had an active military presence during World War II when it was home to Camp Roberts Army Airfield located adjacent to present day Airport Boulevard between US 1/US 16/SR 527A and SR 528A . After the war ended on September 2nd 1946 local residents decided not to enter into joining any future wars because they did not feel they needed army barracks within their community again so they disbanded camp Roberts Army Airfield effective October 15th 1946
Eustis was founded in 1821 by Colonel John Eustis. The town became a Seminole Indian reservation in 1836, and was annexed by Jacksonville in 1845. In 1898, the town renamed itself after Major General Hernando de Soto, who had led an expedition against Spanish forces in Florida.
