The first guns in Eustis were pistols. A man named Henson bought a rifle from Captain John Holmes in 1836. The rifle was known as the "Eustis Rifle." It was used by the military and law enforcement. In 1845, an ordinance was passed that outlawed handguns in Eustis. In 1896, Eustis had its first police department. Sheriff George Pritchard founded the department to deal with crime and terrorism in the town. Most of the early police officers were volunteers who obtained their training from various sources such as the American Militias and England's Special Branch. In 1911, a new police station was built on State Road 744 in downtown Eustis. The building is still standing and is used today as a courtroom for local court proceedings. In 1951, Eustis had its second police department which was known as the "Crime Prevention Department". This department dealt with crimes like theft, larceny, vandalism, etcetera. In 1966, a new fire station was built in downtown Eustis which is still standing today and is used for fire suppression purposes only. In 1970, another newpolice station was built on State Road 744 near Interstate 95 which is now called "City Hall Station". This station has been replaced by two existing stations which are currently being operated by deputies of neighboring county agencies Callahan Police Department and Lake County Sheriff's Office
Eustis is a town in St. Johns County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eustis is located on the western edge of St. Johns County and is bordered by Volusia to the north, Brevard County to the east, and Palm Beach County to the south. The name "Eustis" comes from two sources: 1) an Alaskan term meaning "fortress" or "castle," because of its location on an uninhabited island (now known as Eustis Island), and 2) English place-name meaning "wine country." Eustis was founded by white people in 1823 as a trading post on the mouth of what is now called Morris Canal; it became a city in 1892 when it annexed adjacent land from Palm Beach County. The area now surrounded by Eustis was first populated by Seminole Indians who followed Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's party when they arrived in 1539 seeking passage to Cuba via Orlando Bay. A small fortuitous discovery near present day Eustis Island in 1819 led to early commercial development there; during that year Native Americans began cultivating tobacco while others hunted wild animals for provisions. In 1824 Captain David Henderson explored and mapped much of what are now parts of St. Johns andBrevard Counties; he named one part of his expedition's journey after King George III, then ruler of England: Henderson Land (now part of Volusia). The town site was platted out at this time but no buildings were built until after Indian Removal in 1830 which removed all traces of indigenous peoples from British North America except for some warrior bands which still exist today around Fort Pierce Harbor – including remnants of the Seminole Tribe – though their language has been largely abandoned since European contact ended more than 1,500 years ago! Today’s downtown business district was established following World War II when numerous military installations were constructed here such as Naval Air Station Jacksonville (later Eglin AFB), Naval Weapons Station Little Creek(later Fort Myers), Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School(formerly Parkland HS), Clearwater Marine Base(later Whiting Field AFB), Eglin AFB Missile Range(later Whiteman AFB), Gadsden Army Ammunition Plant( later DoD Dugway Proving Ground)), Home Depot HQ & Service Center etc.; within limits set forth by General Order No 3163 dated Jul 1942….. Although today many older facilities have been closed or sold off their original purpose continues thru continuing use by local government entities various agencies such as Pinellas Park District Light Rail Authority serving primarily Midtown In 1830 whites began moving into what is now downtown Eustiss from various nearby townships purchase land along US Highway 1A at milepost 438 west (now US 9th Street). One result was rapid growth which continued well into the 20th century despite competition from other developing cities such as Jacksonville and Miami….During World War II Over $100 million worth Of aircraft materials produced here included Lockheed B-29 Superfortresses used extensively against Japan…..Today Downtown Business District has experienced significant revitalization spearheaded by Mayor Bob Buckman who created several new initiatives including creating Historic Districts designation for several dozen historic buildings mostly related to aviation industry……Some notable developments include creationof Downtown Management District which oversees plaza layout plans redevelopmentofthe riverfrontpromoters utilizing private funds particularityforrestorationofhistoricMarina areasandvariousnewbuildings surroundingMarinaswhilenumerousolderfacilities havebeenclosedorsoldofftheiroriginalpurposeandreplacedbynewerfacilities….As seen throughout Florida local governments are increasingly using private dollars rather than public funding towards certain types or functions….In recent years automobiles may once again become a dominant factor providing social services away from central Government control……Althoughtoday few older facilities have been closed or sold off their original purpose continues thru continuing usebylocalgovernmententities varioustypesofagenciesservingprimarilyMidtown

Eustis, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 18,748 at the 2010 census. Eustis was founded in 1892 by physician and educator Dr. George H. Eustis with the goal of providing health care to the people of Polk County. The town's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing. Eustis has a large military installation known as Camp Butler which is home to both American and South Korean troops stationed there for joint military exercises. The first settlers in what would become Eustis were Drs. George H. Eustis and James Bogue who arrived in 1892 from Kentucky with their families. They set up a small farm east of town on what is now State Road 24A (now US 93). In 1898, Captain John Sisson of the Spanish Navy landed at mile marker 8 on present day US 93 near present day Eustis to explore an area that had been discovered by him during his exploration of the Gulf Coast region in 1795-96 It was called San Miguel de Allende by Spain because it possessed abundant gold deposits which led them to believe that this land could be turned into an empire like Mexico City or New Orleans under Spanish rule However, when they found no gold but plenty of timber and swampy areas, they abandoned their expedition and returned to Cuba In 1902, Doctor George Hurd became interested in starting a medical school near Gainesville so he moved his family from Knoxville Tennessee to Gainesville where he purchased property along Warrenton Drive between State Road 210 (now US 19) and SR 233 In 1904 he opened the first hospital west of Memphis – Stroud Hospital named after himself . He also started construction on what would become today's University campus across SR 233 from today's Walmart store . On October 1st 1906 Stroud Hospital began admitting patients for treatment of tuberculosis which then Treatment Unit #1 became operational within one year By 1909 it had become clear that tuberculosis wasn't going away any time soon so Drs Houston & White designed Treatment Unit #2 which became operational September 1st 1912 . That same year saw the opening of Stroud Library which became America’s first nursing home open to everyone regardless socio-economic status or race
