Polk founded Fort Brooke as an outpost on what is now State Road 527 east of Eustis after his victory at the Battle of Palo Alto which ended Mexican rule over Cuba. The fort served as a supply depot for American forces during the Seminole Wars and as a military base for American expansion into Florida. In 1854, Egbert Bogue donated land to build Eustis High School which became one of the largest high schools inUF history. In 1907, Waddell Brothers constructed what is now downtown Eustis on land donated by Egbert Bogue that included present-day Eustis Middle School and Park Drive Elementary School; it was the first municipally owned public school inUF history.
