Eustis is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area and is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Davie Combined Statistical Area. Eustis was founded by Spanish settlers in 1763 as Punta Gorda de las Comunidades de Cristianos (Gulf Coast Christian Villages). In 1823, Eustis became part of Seminole Territory. On January 11, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to cross over the bayous leading to Eustis and besiege Fort Brooke which then surrendered to Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant two days later. The first post office in Eustis opened on November 15, 1857. A store and a school were built there in 1859 by Denton Cobb and brothers Elijah and John Cobb; both are buried at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in nearby Clearwater Beach. A cotton gin was built on this site in 1865 by Jno Meeks; it burned down in 1895 but has been rebuilt several times since then including most recently in 2000 as part of a historical courthouse renovation project that also included reconstruction of Soldier Field across from City Hall (now known as CityPlace). In 1893–1894, local farmers erected an iron fence around their fields with gates that open into stalls for wagons carrying goods to market near what is now University Avenue (later Boulevard). This facility now houses various businesses including Citrus World Market & Restaurant and WellPoint Health Network Clinic., among others. At about this time African Americans began arriving permanently in rural areas east of Jacksonville due to emancipation efforts led by Governor Andrew Johnson during Reconstruction Era America's "Great Migration". Many white farmers found work opportunities difficult to find for blacks working under nepotism laws passed during Reconstruction era governance structures which excluded many whites from high-level government positions such as those held by blacks such as governor Johnson himself until after 1918 when these policies were changed somewhat through legislation called "the Civil Rights Act" or "The Voting Rights Act". As a result of these difficulties many black people decided to move westward into new areas incorporating their new experiences with white people living near them into their social fabric rather than seeking out higher level employment opportunities closer to downtown Jacksonville or eastern Tallahassee where jobs were available only if you could afford them or if your family could provide support via agriculture or other manual labor activities not easily accessible outside larger cities during this time period
