Police later determined that Fenton had planned to use the guns for her own protection following an altercation with her ex-boyfriend, who she claimed had threatened her life if she ever spoke about him publicly again. In 1981, six handguns were found hidden inside a Crate & Barrel boxcar owned by Wayne Hernandez during his drive from southern Illinois back home to Florida after winning $2 million in a statewide poker tournament. The boxescar had been transported from Illinois by truckloads of ammunition destined for Mexico City and was thought to be empty until it yielded six firearms: three Colt 1911 pistols and three Glock 19 semiautomatic pistols along with rounds of ammunition and instruction manuals covering how to operate each firearm individually (the manual also included photos of each firearm).

Edgewater's name comes from "Eagle Key", on a peninsula that forms the edge of Lake Okeechobee. The community was founded by Methodists in 1875 and named for their leader, Rev. John A. Edgewater. Panama Canal expansionist James Kenedy purchased land near Edgewater in 1884 and started to develop it into a resort community with palatial villas for railroad executives and other wealthy Atlantans; however, Kenedy failed to make money from his project and sold most of his holdings to other investors before dying in 1893. The first post office serving Edgewater opened in 1886; it was renamed Kissimmee after then-President Ulysses S. Grant's daughter (1868–1941). In 1909, Kissimmee became the county seat when Marco Island was annexed by Polk County. In 1921, developer Arturo Perez bought land northeast of town and began developing what would become known as "the Riviera" area; he built dozens of high-end houses and millinery stores along Seminole Boulevard (now US 1), which became one of Florida's most luxurious shopping areas during the 1920s and 1930s as well as an important center for political power politics due to its location between Miami Beach/Dade County to the north and Tampa/St Petersburg to the south. However, Perez met financial difficulties soon after starting work on his development and died childless in 1928; donations from members of Miami Beach's high society helped keep Perez's mansion standing until it was destroyed by fire in 1984 despite claims by some residents that permission had been obtained from city leaders not to demolish it because it could be used as a model for new housing developments on Clearwater Bayou across I-4 from downtown Miami proper should such plans ever come about—a prospect now being explored by developers who hope to reopen its former site as a park or open-air museum dedicated to Perez's life story while also creating new business corridors connecting downtown Miami with nearby Fort Lauderdale/Pompano Beach/.
