Edgewater is a small town in Wakulla County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles (40 km) east of Pensacola and 30 miles (48 km) north of Fort Walton Beach. The first mention of Edgewater date back to 1792 when it was known as "Natchez". In 1821 it became part of Wakulla County and in 1828 it incorporated as a village. In 1865, it was named for General Daniel Boone who had come through this area in search for land to settle. Many new homes were built throughout the 1920s and 1930s as more and more people moved into Edgewater from all over Wakulla County. However, since 1945 Edgewater has seen an increase in its overall membership due to its location within easy reach of both Pensacola Naval Air Station (NAS) and NAS Key Largo which are home to several naval air stations including Eglin AFB which provides much needed airspace during storms such as Hurricane Irma; plus numerous smaller airports serving local communities nearby like Live Oak Point Airport located about 10 miles east of town on US Highway 1A; Ormond Beach Airport located about 15 miles south-west of town on US Highway 98W; Asbury Park Airport located about 30 miles northeast of town on Interstate 95E; and NAVFLEX – an Army post operated by NAS Key Largo – serving most areas within 5 statute miles radius including much closer neighborhoods such as Old Town Pensacola where you can find shopping malls filled with latest technology equipment along with various types stores belonging to different branches/cements/wooden docks etc., giving residents almost everything they need close at hand should they need something not available at their current hometown address! The first settlers in Edgewater were Dutchmen who arrived in 1794. They named their community "Vliet" after the village in Holland where they had been born and raised. A post office was established here on February 10, 1875, and mail was brought to the town by mule team until 1903 when a train service began. The first store opened in 1907 and the first school opened in 1915. In 1917, construction began on what would become St Petersburg's first hospital—the Masonic Hospital which became known as "The grandmother of modern medicine." In 1930, Edgewater lost its incorporated status but continued to operate under special rules set by county commissioners until it merged with neighboring Clearwater into one municipality on November 3 of that year. In 1961, Hurricane Forster struck southern Florida and during its passage through the area damage occurred to many homes including parts of Edgewater which received over $500 million dollars worth of damage from wind and rain alone! After Hurricane Forster Edgewater experienced some economic trouble as businesses closed their doors for lack of insurance reimbursement; however such difficulties quickly passed when new business establishments started up throughout town eager to capitalize on storm damagecash incentives and other forms of assistance available from local officials On January 15th 2006 residents voted unanimously to change their name from "Edgewater" to "Downtown Downtown".
