Edgewater is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pompano Beach–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Edgewater" was first given to the community by oil men who were looking for a place to put their drilling rigs during construction of Boca Raton's first airport. In 1899, George Winton and others purchased land in what is now Edgewater and began development of the town on it. The original buildings were wood frame structures with one-story gables and large yards behind them. In 1909, the town became an incorporated municipality with a city commission form of government under which it had mayoral authority but no vote in city elections other than through referendum. When Boca Raton annexed Edgewater in 1928, incorporation ceased to exist as a separate entity within Boca Raton. However, residents continued to use "Edgewater" as their address until 1940 when they changed it to "Pompano Beach". In 1950, the Town Council decided that fishing should be an important component of local economy and passed a resolution calling for establishment of an annual fishing tournament at Mango Key beachfront park in honor of then-Mayor Harry Fenton Smith. That same year also saw the dedication of what would become known as Park Avenue (now Cypress Avenue), which runs along Park Boulevard from Westshore Drive into Edgewater proper. At its peak there were over 100 businesses located along Park Avenue including several banks and shopping malls such as JCPenney and Sears Roebuck & Co., making it one of North America's largest shopping districts during that time period
