The town built a plaque bearing the inscription "Gemini 5 Town - July 1957" at its edge of Main Street where Gemini 5 first took off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on July 16, 1957 under Project Mercury/Redstone 1 mission flown by John Glenn during his orbital voyage around Earth as part of Project Apollo 11." With only 775 residents as of 2000,[1] Edgewater is one of the smallest towns inBroward County and one of just two unincorporated communities in south-central Broward County.[2] However, with its location close to Interstate 95 (I-95) and major shopping malls such as Herald Square Shopping Center and Sunrise Mall within easy commuting distance,[3],Edgewater has seen rapid growth over the past few decades – rising from 3,000 residents [4]in 1990[5]to 10,000 residents [6]in 2007[7]; 12,500 residents [8]in 2013; 14,700 residents [9]in 2016; and 17,800 currentResidents as of 2018 according to US Census Bureau projections.[10][11][12].
