In 1875, Captain Arthur Ahern erected a white sugarcane plantation on what is now Pompano Beach Boulevard near today's intersection of Northeast First Street and Northwest Third Avenue. The first African American to live in Edgewater was Wirt Colfax who came with his family from Georgia in 1893. He worked on Captain Ahern's sugar plantation until 1898 when he moved to Coral Gables and started his own business manufacturing cigars under the name "Wirt & Sons." Colfax was among the first black businessmen in South Florida and played an important role in developing citrus growing and marketing around Miami Beach. After Wirt's death in 1951, his son Julius took over operations of the company and continues to run it today with assistance from staff members including their daughter Barbara Gates who runs Wirt Brothers Insurance Company adjacent to their plantations on NE First Street just south of I-95 exit 8A (I- 95exit 9B).
