Edgewater is a town located in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville–Roscoe, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1894 by brothers George and James Edgewater. It was named for Jephson's Ferry on the St Johns River. The Edgewater Lighthouse stands today on a waterfront site that once housed a store and post office as well as an arena used for concerts and other events. In 1911, the first school opened in Edgewater with grades one through twelve. In 1945, the first high school graduated seniors from Edgewater High School. In 1957, Edgewater Middle School opened its doors to students grades eleven through twelve; it would become known as "Edgewater Jr./Sr." In 1984, Edgewater Senior High School becamefully itself when it merged with nearby Parkland High School to form Parkland-Edgewater HS/TFB (now called Parkland-Polk HS). Today, there are three schools within the boundaries of Edgewater: Edison Middle School (grades nine-12), Edison Junior/Senior High School (grades eleven- thirteen), and Parkland-Edgewood HS/TFB (formerly called Parkland-Polk HS). There are also several churches within the community including First Baptist Church of Jacksonville which has their worship center located in neighboring east Pasco County; Methodist Episcopal Church which has their church building located just north of town on Hwy 619; Presbyterian Church which has their church building located just south of town on Hwy 619; and Evangelical Lutheran congregation which has their congregation building located just west of town on Sunrise Road near Pritchard Elementary School

Pershing introduced a new type of iron sights called "Pershing's Line" that used an elevating reticle in addition to a crosshair on the front sight plane. Edgewater was founded in 1824 by Captain John D. Edgewater and his wife, Sarah. The town became a resort for the wealthy and powerful in the early days of Florida's history. They named their new land "Edgewater" after their ship, the Dolphin, which sailed from London docking at Fort Myers to explore the area. In 1830, Captain John Dutton's brother-in-law James Waddell donated two more acres (0.8 km²). In 1832, Colonel Thomas Jarratt donated four more acres (1 km²). These donations allowed for the construction of an initial public road called "Dolphin Road". A post office was established at Edgewater in 1834 and operated until 1840. In 1836, Captain John Dutton erected a public house on what is now Main Street named after himself - The Dolphin House. It was later renamed The Commodore Hotel when it became known as one of Florida's leading hotels and restaurants during World War II. The first store opened in Edgewater in 1837 by Captains Edward Aiken and Nathaniel Barnardt under license from King George III of England for use by American traders travelling through Florida Bayous on their way to Cuba or South America. The first school opened in1838 by Mrs., Martha Kincaid who taught children up to age fourteen about reading and writing with English lesson plans provided by Mrs., Edwin Latham For many years this school served as the only source of education for children living within easy reach of downtown Edgewater proper where they could attend morning classes starting at 7am while their parents took care of evening work and later attended local academies or private schools outside town limits subject to approval/exclusion from Mrs., Kincaid herself! As word spread among these early pioneers that there were places available inside or near downtown if they desired schooling beyond what was available at home even though such homes were still considered lowly dwellings some families decided just to leave everything behind go down into Poverty Creek Canyon country full stop having no other place to turn than there I am ashamed say my grandparents did same when I applied too learn
The first Europeans to visit Florida were the Spanish in 1513. After years of exploration, they found a area that was both rich in resources and had plenty of open areas for expansion. In 1845, the United States acquired Florida from Mexico in a Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The United States did not gain sovereignty over Florida until 1959 when it became an independent state. The area that is now Edgewater was part of what is now Miami-Dade County during this time.
