Edgewater is a small town in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,592 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original settlers in Edgewater were farmers and their families who arrived from Georgia in 1847. They platted what is now Edgewater on a parcel of land that had been donated by Captain John Finnis. The community grew rapidly due to its location near Tampa's exploding docks during the late 1800s as well as its proximity to agricultural areas and citrus production. In 1907, Sam Bassett organized a group of businessmen under the name "The Athletic Club" to improve economic conditions in Pasco County. They purchased 300 acres (121 km2) of land east of downtown Tampa and began construction on what would become known as "Bassett Park". This $10 million park included baseball, football, tennis, track and field facilities as well as a movie theater and other commercial buildings. It was completed in 1911 and was one of the largest public works projects ever undertaken in Hillsborough County. During World War II, Edgewater became an important site for military recruitment because it housed two phosphate plants used to create T-38 tanks and other armored vehicles; these plants were located just outside town limits instead of within city districts like most others in Hillsborough County at that time. In 1948, when Pinellas County merged with Pasco County, Edgewater became part of that new county; it has remained so since then. Edgewater experienced rapid growth following the 1990s recession which saw job losses throughout much of central Florida but also helped spur development around the town including some mixed-use projects such as The Bayou (a convention center/banquet hall/restaurant complex), Morningside Heights (a senior living complex), and Will Rogers Elementary School (now Sarasota State University).
