Edgewater, Florida is a town located in Broward County, Florida. The population was 22,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The first optical products in Edgewater were eyeglasses and sunglasses made by Julius Hirschfeld and Sons. In 1903, Julius Hirschfeld opened a store on Northwest Fourth Street called "Hirschfeld's Optical Emporium". In 1926, Harry Kessler opened his first optics store in Edgewater called "Kessler's Camera & Optics". From 1927 to 1952, Harry Kessler was the owner and president of Pointe Claire Glass Company which manufactured eyeglasses and other optical products for both retail and institutional customers. In 1951, Edward Drysdale reopened his business as Drysdale Optical Corporation with headquarters on Southwest Third Street in Edgewater. This company became one of the leading producers of wintertime optical products including sunglasses, sunglasses frames, sun glasses and contact lenses among others until it was purchased by Raytheon Corporation in 1984. Raytheon continued producing Eyedrops (water soluble lens) production until 1991 when it merged with Allied Signal Corporation to form Raytheon/Allied Signal Corporation - one of America's largest electronics companies. Today there are three main divisions within Raytheon: Optronics; Electronics; Missile Defense Systems Division - responsible for providing technology that defends our country from ballistic missiles or other threats emanating from outer space. The History of Optronics can be traced back to 1885 when Abraham Baldwin founded Philadelphia optician Unwin Brothers Limited - one of the earliest retailers selling eyeglasses over the phone using an early form of telephony known as 'phone eye'. In 1907 Unwin Brothers Ltd., joined forces with English optician Wm Hunter & Co Ltd to create The Hunter-Wessex Group Limited - one of Britain's largest opticians before merging into ASOS plc (an Opteco limited company) in 1968 which became British Airways (BA). From 1969 through 1998 BA operated its own sales force under the name British Eye Holding plc which then went public as BAE Systems Holdings PLC (BAEHSPLC) prior to its acquisition by Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space Co., Incorporated (LMTMCO) on 5/1/2008.

By 1960, Edgewater had become an important transportation hub for southern Florida because of its central location within easy routes to both Jacksonville and Miami Beach (at that time only 10 minutes away). In 2013, Forbes magazine placed Edgewater atop their list of "America's fastest-growing communities". In recent years, growth has slowed due to demographic changes within the Town including a decline in people living near Interstate 95 which now dominates most travel paths into and out of town; however, there has been some resurgence recently with plans to redevelop portions of downtown along I-95 if funding can be secured

In 1954, the town built its own church, which remains functioning today as the only brick church in Edgewater. The first Baptist pastor served here from 1896 until 1924. Edgewater has been home to many businesses and institutions over its history including: The First National Bank (1892), Eastern Life Insurance Company (1905), State Penitentiary (1954), and Jacksonville Naval Shipyard (1965). Today there are several restaurants and stores in downtown Edgewater that serve up typical Jacksonville dishes like chicken fingers or seafood tacos for lunch or dinner along with more unusual items like fresh squeezed juices from wild grapefruit trees located on Market Street near Interstate 95A/US 19 south of town center
Edgewater was founded in 1892 by J.C. Hindman and his brother-in-law, George A. Wallace. The town was named after the Bluffs on the west side of Clearwater River which were seen as a beautiful sight from where they built their home. In 1907, Edgewater joined with St Petersburg to form the Pinellas County municipality, which lasted until 1959 when it was amalgamated into Tampa.
