The name "Edgewater" was given to the islands near the mouth of the Miami River by Captain John Smith during his exploration of South America in 1606. In 1868, Dr. George Peabody donated land for a public park and school system in Edgewater which became one of the most popular areas in Miami-Dade County. In 1924, Egleston Oil Company developed an oil well on land that forms part of today's city limits and leased it to Edison Electric Incorporated for $1 million over 25 years. Edison Electric built a pipeline from the wellhead eastward to downtown Miami and began production in 1926; this helped create a large demand for gasoline and kerosene throughout southern Florida. In 1932, Mayor Manuel López Rivera hired architect Albert Jarry as planner for new civic facilities including City Hall and Riverside Park then known as Midtown Park on NE First Avenue across from Iver Johnson Air Force Base; Jarry designed what is now known as Central Park West along NW Second Street between First Avenue and Lee Street with its monumental clock tower towering over other buildings on Capitol Square between Northwest Tenth Avenue and Northwest Eleventh AvenueNW/. Mr. Fenton replaced Jarry as planner after López Rivera's death in 1934 due to health problems caused by alcoholism

Edgewater, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,832 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Established in 1878 as "Creekville", it became Edgewater in 1907. The name Creekville comes from the Choctaw word "kalikuli" meaning "grandfathers" or "ancestors". The post office at Edgewater opened on October 15, 1877, and remained open until September 17, 1909. The land where Edgewater now stands was first developed by Isadore Peck and others in 1878-79 as a citrus grove near what is now the Jacksonville Naval Station and other military installations. A survey of the area done in 1902 showed that there were only two homes and twenty-eight acres (twenty hectares) of land available for agricultural purposes. In 1907, to capitalize on its location on a navigable river leading into Tampa Bay, Edgewater established itself as an official town with a charter from Governor Woodrow Wilson. As part of this effort to attract businesses and people to its new community, Edgewater erected a large brick courthouse/civic center and built several contributing buildings including a Baptist church (now known as First Baptist Church), high school (now known as North Central High School), post office (now known as US Post Office), library (now known as Gulf Coast Community Library), Nursery/School Supply storefront building (#1), Hardware store front building (#2), six-story blacksmith shop front building (#3) - all still extant - and two garage entrances which served both local residents and visitors to the town during its early years; these garages are also still extant today. It was not until 1951 that Interstate 95 was constructed through Duval County connecting Jacksonville with Tallahassee via St Petersburg; this made possible increased access to jobs in northern Duval County outside of Creekville while also adding some muchneeded housing developments around Edgewater proper; one such development being Ocean Terrace which replaced what had been creek bank beyond Mrs Fenton's home - now known as Neptune Avenue - within minutes of I-95 exit marker! Today's downtown districts of Government Center Park & Jack Kemp Parkway NW offer excellent views across Hillsborough Bay towards downtown Tampa Bay! In 1957 when Interstate 95 bypassed downtown along Constitution Boulevard SW it directly impacted creek valley between Mrs Fenton's house & Neptune Ave., causing major damage (& half acre lot next door went too) so city annexed whole neighborhood then moved houses onto newly acquired land from city limits
