The community experienced significant change after Hurricane Andrew slammed into Miami in 1992; Edgewater lost most of its population but regained some stability through development within the community itself. Today, Edgewater is home to several businesses and restaurants, as well as two high schools – one public and one private – which offer various programs for kids and adults alike.
Edgewater is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Edgewater was made up of two families who arrived from Cuba in 1847. They were the de la Vega family and the García family. The first post office was established in 1851, and it operated as "Granada". In 1860, three men named John A. Kingcrantz moved to what is now Edgewater and founded a store called the Jacksonville Store on Northwest Fourth Street which became one of the most successful businesses in Miami-Dade County until its closure in 1978. In 1865, entrepreneur Isaac Hill purchased land east of Biscayne Boulevard for $2,000 and began to build a cotton plantation that would become known as Hillcrest Plantation. He hired Wernher von Braun to design a windmill that would power his mill; it was completed in 1868 and remains operational today. In 1886, Jno Epps bought Hillcrest Plantation from Hillcrest's son Isaac and began to grow sugar cane on site while also developing other plantations across southern Florida including Hialeah Plantation (now Metropark) and Leeward Islands Plantations near Key West). By 1901, Jno Epps had built an empire that included plantations throughout south Florida as well as several thousand acres (20 km²) of citrus groves on Long Island Sound along with warehouses for storage purposes for his fruit crops; he was considered one ofFlorida's leading businessmen during this time period. By 1920, Jno Epps' company had merged with another business renamed DuPont which created DuPont Sales Corporation which continued to operate under different names until 1974 when it merged with American Crystal Company forming America Crystal Industries Inc.. During World War II both companies produced munitions for the military such as bombs and shells; during this time DuPont also developed nylon cordage which helped support Allied troops during World War II before being acquired by Raytheon following the war's end.
