Edgewater is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by commissioners from Stonington and Neptune Beach. The name comes from the English word "edgewater" meaning "a flowing river." The first post office opened in 1893. The townsite was platted in 1892 by commissioners from Stonington and Neptune Beach; it became a municipal entity in 1902. In 1906, Edgewater annexed neighboring Pinecrest and built its first schoolhouse there. Edgewater was founded in 1859 by John H. Edgewater and his brother, George W. Edgewater. The town was named for the St. Johns River which flows through it. The first settler in Edgewater was Elisha Cook who arrived in 1858. Cook operated a ferry service between Edgewater and Jacksonville until he died in 1859. In 1861, the town passed to George W.'s son, John H., who organized a flour mill and also built a house on Main Street. In 1865, John H.'s grandson, James P., purchased the flour mill from his father and continued to operate it until 1902 when it was sold to Jepson Mfg Co of Tampa Bay. In 1903, James P.'s son became president of Jepson Mfg Co., which changed its name to Gulf Refineries Incorporated in 1954. Gulf Refineries Incorporated manufactured gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene and other petroleum products until they closed their doors in 1979 after many years of failure. After their closure, many residents moved into new homes built along Uptown Boulevard near the airport while others commute to Jacksonville for work or live within walking distance of school and shopping opportunities on Dixie Highway
Edgewater was founded in 1892 by J.B. Stephenson and his brother, J.W. Stephenson. The town name is derived from the spot where they first built their sawmill, "Edgewater Mill", on the banks of the St Johns River. It was incorporated in 1907 and grew rapidly until World War II when a lack of jobs forced the town to close its doors. In 1951, Edgewater reopened as an independent community with a population of just over 100 people. Today, Edgewater is a small but vibrant community with several businesses and a variety of cultural events throughout the year
