They named their new community after Eediside Cove, on Long Island Sound near to where they lived. In 1915, the United States Postal Service changed the spelling of its name to "Edgewater" in honor of Rear Admiral John W. Edmonds who had been Commanding Officer ofseaplane Squadron VF-17 during World War I and later became Director at Naval Air Station Miramar which was renamed Naval Air Station Coral Gables in his honor in 1935). In 1922 when Coral Gables Municipal Airport opened it served as the only airport within city limits until 1958 when it became Broward County's main airport with Fort Lauderdale International Airport nearby .
