Gun targets have been a part of the Edgewater community since at least the early 1800s. The first known target was a two-pounder cannonball that was erected in 1816 on the corner of Westside and Lauderdale Avenues. The target is now located in the city's Museum of History and Art. In 1902, Captain Wm. Fenton erected a three-foot-high, 65-pound iron dummy called "The Big One" in front of what is now City Hall to commemorate his victory over Spanish forces at Pensacola Bay. In 1907, Mayor John Larkin commissioned architect Harry Heineman to design an elaborate 10-by-10 inch steel target for use by artillerymen on Fort Myers Beach. The target became one of Edgewater's most popular attractions and was regularly used by artillerymen until it was destroyed by fire in 1951. In 1957, Mayor George Haines unveiled a new 20-by-20 inch steel target called "The Hurricane" in central Park after naming his wife after the storm that struck Florida during that year. After several years of operation, the Target National Bank building collapsed against The Hurricane in 1969 and it was replaced with a newtarget by Don Eager & Sons which still stands today at its original location across from City Hall. Edgewater has also had its share of political gunfire contests and rallies dating back to 1893 when local Republicans held their annual picnic outdoors near Fort Myers Boulevard and University Avenue while Democratic politicians took maneuvers inside City Hall (later moved to nearby United States Courthouse).
