Edgewater, Florida is a town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,626 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan area. The name "Edgewater" comes from the Suwannee River and its tributaries that flow through the town. The first permanent settler in Edgewater was George Willoughby who arrived in 1838. He built a house on what is now Main Street. In 1839 he married Lucy Moulton and they settled down in what is now First Street east of US 41A (now US 441). They had two children: George Willoughby II and Lucilla Augusta Willoughby. In 1845 Charles Hinson purchased land near present day Fort Myers Beach for $2,000 cash and set out to make his home there. By 1850 he had established himself as a farmer and postmaster with his new home named Hinson's Landing on the mouth of the Suwannee River. A store and sawmill were built soon afterwards followed by a gristmill before becoming an insurance agency in 1865 under the name of Stark & Co., which continued until 1975 when it merged with Citizens National Bank to form Citizens Bank of Jacksonville Incorporated (CNJI). In 1868 John Eller bought 160 acres south of Edgewater from Major John Pritchard for $8 per acre after discovering phosphate deposits there on his trip across country scouting for new land grants during Reconstruction Era America's great moral experiment known as Manifest Destiny . When Jeptha Sargeant became governor of Florida in 1870 he issued pardons to all those convicted of crimes committed during Reconstruction including Eller who had already moved away from state lines into north Georgia Territory where he started farming again after being freed from prison by President Ulysses S Grant following his pardon power restoration proclamation issued on November 15th, 1870 called "Pardon Laws Amendment No 5". As part of this reversion process Jeptha also granted Eller citizenship back within Florida proper so that he could continue practicing law there full time instead of living someplace else while still maintaining ties to Georgia which at that point was still part of the Union despite having seceded from her government three years earlier due to different issues surrounding slavery but also because Georgia politicians felt they needed more representation than they did within their own state given that their fellow Georgians were doing better financially than them overall while most Floridians were struggling economically; something especially true among black Floridians like Eller who even after buying their freedom couldn't afford to leave their plantations behind completely since prices for cottonseed oil & other crops had continued to rise inland while prices for slaves staying on plantations nationwide plummeted commensurate with increasing industrialization among white Americans throughout much parts American South well beyond Jacksonville (Ellers plantation being one such example) ). This move westward towards modern day Daytona Beach began what would become known as Seminole County - much like today's Orange County - an area made up primarily or entirely of Native American/Seminole people whose ancestors had originally inhabited this region long before European settlers arrived looking forinction resources such as gold, cattle and citrus fruits etc.; something many consider ironic given Seminole Tribe members have actively fought against white expansionism both inside & outside America throughout history (& indeed ongoing resistance All over Central America (& Mexico too although less overtly publicized these days) ) Okaloosa River Indian Nation has been involved militarily in several conflicts directly or indirectly related to ongoing U.S./Spanish involvement all along its lengthy border conflict with mainland America dating back centuries ); how Edgewater fits into this story really depends upon your perspective ). Anyway back onto my point; nutshell beINFRAID grew increasingly conservative due largely TO 3 things: lack OF education available locally regarding Brazilian culture & customs leading many young adults growing up here not being able to effectively interact WITH locals which perpetuates cultural disconnection; elderly residents unable or unwilling To participate fully anymore either vacated homes OR died suddenly making life difficult FOR youngsters coming generation #1 led TO Generation #2 developing various forms OF self-reliance thru: fishing, Gardening etc.; generating income thru industry leading local businesses beginning contemporaneously WITH 2nd wave suburban migration fueled largely by availability OF jobs nationally once WWII ended .) In 1892, the first post office in Edgewater opened. The town was named for Captain James P. Edgewater, who had come to Florida in 1849 as a U.S. Army officer and died there in 1860.
