Edgewater is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2009 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Augustine Metropolitan Statistical Area. Edgewater is located on U.S. Route 301 and Coopers Creek, about 10 miles (16 km) east of Jacksonville and 25 miles (40 km) north of St. Augustine. The original settlers in what is now Edgewater were farmers who arrived in 1847 from Georgia and Alabama. They named their new community after HMS "Ede", a British sailing vessel that had crossed the Atlantic Ocean on November 3, 1846, becoming the first American ship to reach Liverpool after being refloated from an iceberg off Cape Cod. In 1850, two brothers – Heman Wimer and Isaac Norris – started a grocery store in what is now downtown Edgewater which became one of the most successful businesses in Jacksonville until it closed its doors in 1907. In 1902, Gussie Latham opened her first restaurant in what is now called Latham's Landing Shopping Center; she would later rename it The Gussie Shop when she moved to St Petersburg Beach.[2] The area around present-day Edgewater was originally swampy and thick with trees that restricted travel by wagon or horseback because of mudslides during heavy rains or hurricanes; this natural obstacle to development was overcome by building over 100 homes between 1915 and 1925 inclusive. dredging operations began shortly before World War II as part of efforts to provide more open water for shipping while also increasing agricultural production; afterward much of the land surrounding Edgewater was developed into housing developments such as Parkland Manor[3][4] which include several golf courses,[5] Clearwater Oaks[6], Sunrise Shadows[7], Wintergreen Lakes[8], Golden Apple Homes[9][10],[11], Harbourside Isles [12],[13],[14],[15]), Ascot Meadow [16]; Belleview Estates [17]; Harbor Pointe [18]; Cliffhaven [19]; Dolphin Cove [20]; Spanish Bay Estate Community Clubhouses,[21] Riviera Heights,[22][23][24]. In 1961 residents voted not to annex neighboring unincorporated communities Jacksonville Beach and Neptune beach due to concerns about traffic congestion caused by increased numbers of people living near Interstate 90/ US 301 interchange connecting these communities with city services but annexation did occur six years later.[25][26]. Edgewater was founded on December 3, 1868 by J. L. Edgewater and Wm. G. Cook as a small outpost on the Miami River near present-day Doral. The area that would become Edgewater was first inhabited by the Tequesta people and then by African American slaves. In 1836, General James K. Polk founded Seminole Creek Indian Removal Company to move Native Americans from their homes in south Florida to new land west of the Mississippi River. The city's first school opened in 1887 and it became a municipally owned school system in 1924. The first annexation of Edgewater occurred on December 30, 1954 when it merged with Overtown to form a single municipality under the name "Edgewater". On July 1, 1961, the City Council approved an ordinance annexing Fort Lauderdale into Edgewater as well; this made Edgewater one of only two cities in mainland South Florida that had both city councils (the other being Coral Gables).
