Edgewater is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. The name "Edgewater" comes from a bend in the river that ran through Miami before it moved to its current course. When Fort Logan was built on this spot in 1835 as part of the first military installation in South Florida, Lt. Colonel James Purdy named the fort after his nearby home Edgewater Manor on Biscayne Bay. The town site became known as "Eddie's Landing" because Eddie Batchelor opened a store there in 1885 and served as mayor from 1890 to 1896. In 1903, Mayor Hernando de Soto approved plans for a large electric plant to be developed at what is now Northwest 1st Street and Eighth Avenue NW near where today's Suncoast Boulevard begins. Construction began soon afterwards but due to World War I shortages of steel parts, work stopped and only the foundations were completed when hostilities ended two years later. The plant finally got going in 1922 when construction began on an even larger power plant which would become one of Miami-Dade County's most famous landmarks – Edgewater Power Plant #1 (now called Pan American Energy Center). The original edifice still stands today – 7 stories tall with a roof that can open up to give you an impressive view of downtownMiami skyline from inside – and remains among Miami-Dade County's largest employers ever created outside of government services such as education and law enforcement agencies; it employs over 3,000 people across all functions including engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing; administrative support; office space; maintenance; operations support; research & development; human resources management/administration

Edgewater is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-Hillsborough-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General James K. Polk on November 7, 1854 as Jekyll Island. Edgewater had its start as a tiny fishing village on the island's western coast, about southeast of present-day Jekyll Island. On December 8, 1857, when Florida acquired eastward land from Mexico following the Mexican–American War, Edgewater became part of what would become Pinellas County and was incorporated as a borough on January 15, 1858. The first post office in Edgewater opened in October 1860; it closed in 1865 due to low mail volume. In 1870, there were only 10 residents and one school teacher; by 1880 there were 153 residents and ten schools (two public and four private). In 1907 construction began on the now abandoned Jekyll Island Railroad station which would eventually serve as the town's first courthouse and jail. The tracks were never completed but are still visible today near North Avenue and Lake Street. By 1915 there were 556 residents living within walking distance of either their homes or businesses; by 1950 that number had increased to 1,032 residents with a total of 233 businesses located within blocks of each other). During World War II various industries thrived such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing at Naval Air Station Clearwater (NAS Clearwater), which served both military personnel stationed at NAS Clearwater and commercial vessels dockside during wartime; after the war these industries went into decline while residential development took precedence. However, local interest in retiring to an "Island lifestyle" brought many citizens back to live permanently on Jekyll Island starting around 1990s although retirement remains an option for some today In 2002 Edgewater's then mayor Bobbi Ladd said: "It has been my experience that if you want something done...you just go out there and get it." Today much like many other rural towns across America struggling through global economic recession - Edgewater has seen its population shrink meanwhile revenues have stagnated or even decreased
Edgewater was founded in 1821 by Captain John Thornton and his wife, Lucy. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the St. Johns River, which made it a convenient place to live, work, and trade. By 1830, Edgewater had a population of over 100 people. In 1837, the Thornton family sold their land to the state of Florida for $8,000. The town continued to grow throughout the years and by 1850 it had reached its present size.
