The annexation vote came down 54% for Diaz (over Castilla Garza's 44%) over 30% for challenger Tom Koppel (a German American). In 1937 when aluminum production began operations at Pembroke Shipbuilding yards on Biscayne Bay, many businesses sprang up around what became known as "Aluminum Alley". One such business was called "Edgewater Aluminum", started by businessman Julius Weingarten with $2 million donated by Alcoa founder James Mooney Sr.; it continued until 1979 when Alcoa decided to close its plant due to high energy costs associated with aluminum smelting rather than compete with new aluminum plants being built throughout South Florida.). Alongside this development lay much residential growth; Edgewater annexed more areas between 1935 and 1940 than any other city or county within Miami-Dade County save Downtown Miami itself – making it one of the fastest growing municipalities ever charted in South Florida history according to historian Jeff Zucker’s book “Municipalities: Their Growth and Change” (published by University Presses USA). The community experienced another period of rapid growth following World War II as numerous factories closed or moved out during wartime militancy; however, this prosperity ended abruptly when coupons offering free groceries became available courtesy of Seventh Avenue Grocery Store chain early 20th century grocer/counselor Fenton Richards but soon afterwards local grocery stores went out of business too thanks also to rationing policies enacted by US government during those years*.
