Edgewater, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Edgewater is located on US 1 and Interstate 441. The first settlers to the area were native Seminoles who had been relocated from their original land by Creek Indians in 1821. They named the place "Eddie's Landing" after Edward Epps, an American white witness to the Indian Massacre of 1835 near what is now Tampa. In 1865, Fernandina Beach became a separate municipality and Edgewater began to develop as a post office and agricultural center with citrus production becoming an important factor in its development. The town's name was changed to Edgewater in 1936 when it became part of Polk County. Edgewater has six schools: two elementary schools and four middle schools; one high school (grades 9-12); one special needs/vocational school; one adult education program; two park rangers; one fire department; and two ambulance companies serving the community.. In addition, there are three family units that serve as homes for people with physical or developmental disabilities: One home provides care for adults with dementia or Alzheimer's disease while another provides care for adults age 54 years or older with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Edgewater is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John and Sarah Edgewater. The Edgewater post office opened in 1893 and continued until 1906. The first school in the town was built in 1894 and the first store was built in 1895. In 1907, the town voted to additions to its charter which gave it a Mayor and Two Aldermen form of government with an income tax of $2 per capita on all property owners over $400 annually. In 1915, the name of the town changed from Edgewater to Port Mosey after then-Governor Jeb Stuart's visit there that year. A cotton gin, foundry and sawmill were also established near present-day mile marker #5 on US 19 during this time period. The construction of US 41 (now Turnpike Authority Highway) began shortly thereafter and widened portions of current US 19 through Edgewater before reaching its current routing south of Clearwater Harbor in 1949; today's business district lies within what were once rural areas adjacent to Hwy 41 north of Port Mosey before those boundaries were shifted eastward when highway development expanded into what is now Clearwater Beach
Edgewater was founded in 1892 by Captain Edwin J. Dickey and his wife, the former Belle Bogan. The town quickly became a commercial center for the area, with a variety of businesses including lumberyards, shoe stores, cotton plantations, and an ice cream parlor. In 1916, Edgewater was named one of the "Ten Towns of Florida" by Governor Claude Kirkman. The town's growth slowed after World War II; however, it recovered in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to its proximity to Interstate 4 and its status as a bedroom community.
