Edgewater's history with firearms starts with the shooting of a bear in 1825. A man named George Wexler shot and killed the animal with a rifle, becoming the first person to legally shoot a bear in Florida. The city quickly developed as a center for hunting and gun culture, both legal and illegal. In 1925, Edgewater voted to become an incorporated town, but it was not until 1939 that legislation was passed that allowed residents to own firearms. In 1967, Park County purchased 830 acres of land adjacent to the city limits from John D. Rockefeller for $2 million dollars. This purchase created what is now known as Parkland County Park, home to some of the most famous firearm ranges in America such as NRA National Shooting Complex and US Army’s Fort Polk Shooting Range.
