Edgewater was founded in 1868 by O. B. Edgewater and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the large peninsula that extends into Tampa Bay and forms the eastern border of Lake Worth. In 1922, the city of Tampa annexed Edgewater, making it a part of the newly formed metropolitan area. Edgewater is now an independent city with its own government and municipal services. The history of Edgewater begins with O.B. Edgewater himself. Born in1836 in rural Maryland, he moved to Florida in 1848 after purchasing land near Clearwater on Tampa Bayou (now called Hillsborough River). After several years farming and trading goods with Native American leaders and settlers living along the bayoushore, he decided to settle permanently in what is now Edgewater after seeing only potential for growth on those shoreside acres. He purchased additional land east of downtown Tampa (then known as West Hillsborough) in 1856 and began building his home there today – still standing at 100-year-old age! By 1870, when he built his last house hereabouts, he had developed a significant trade base including shipping supplies from Russia; running a ferry service between Hillsborough River Ferry Terminal and Lakeshore Pier; serving as arbitrator in disputes between adjacent landowners; leasing land to farmers; operating an ice cream parlor; providing lodging for visitors during local holidays; managing a small retail store near Government House Square (later renamed Raymond James Stadium); and playing key roles in helping build both St Petersburg’s first post office (1887) and its first water system (1892). Oscar Biddle III soon followed suit establishes himself hereabouts too, opening a small grocery store on West Adams Avenue which served as a hub for much community activity until it closed around 1960 due to competition from larger stores throughout Southeast Florida! With such success under his belt, Mr. Biddle quickly became one of Downtown Tampa’s most respected citizens well into the 20th century!Shortly thereafter however,he passed away at age 85 leaving behind an estate valued at over $2 million ($102 million USD today)! In 1925 following World War I veteran Ozzie Smith's death at age 96 real estate prices increased dramatically across Southeast Florida due largely to demand brought about bythe munitions industry following America's entry into World War I! From then until fairly recently - !"Edgewater has always been one of our most vibrant communities" declared Mayor John Daley back when this community was included within City Limits expansion efforts back in 1978 !"It [Edgewater] will always be one of our most vibrant cities" proclaimed Mayor John Daley back then
Edgewater was founded by a group of Spanish colonists in the early 1800s. The town quickly became a center for trade and commerce, with its own jail and school system. In 1821, Edgewater was renamed Jacksonville after General Andrew Jackson, who had been victorious in the American Civil War. The town continued to grow during the late 19th century, thanks to its location on the St. Johns River and its access to cheap labor from Florida's phosphate mines. By World War II, Edgewater had become one of Jacksonville's most important commercial districts. It experienced some significant decline in popularity during the 1960s and 1970s as development expanded nearby into what is now Midtown Jacksonville. However, recent gentrification has revived Edgewater as a vibrant community with strong cultural values and ties to its history
