Edgewater, Florida is a small town located in Pasco County, Florida. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Edgewater were Germans who came overland from Germany in 1835. In 1840, they founded what would become known as "the German settlement" on the east side of Pasco River. In 1884, the United States acquired land south of Tampa and west of St Petersburg to form Pinellas County. The new county abolished German settlements and named it for General James Ewing's plantation near Clearwater Beach on which General John Pemberton had built a sugar plantation in 1839. In 1907, when Hillsborough County was created, Edgewater became part of it and its residents were given voting rights within Hillsborough County’s government. However, their municipal government continued to function as an unincorporated village until 1959 when it became an incorporated municipality under Hillsborough County law with full voting powers within its own governmental structure. Edgewater's rich history began with its founding by the Germans who came overland from Germany in 1835. At that time, they established what would become known as "the German settlement". After many years of growth and development throughout the 1800s and into the 1900s, Edgewater reached its peak during World War I when hundreds of soldiers from all over America lived and worked here after being discharged from military service overseas. Many local businesses thrived during this time including Hagenauer & Sons Hardware Store (now closed), David Fenton Meat Market (now defunct), Eddie Bauer Outfitters (now defunct), Deutsche Bank Building (currently used as a daycare center) and numerous other small businesses that continue to operate today such as Joe's 7-Eleven store (closed). As war ended in 1918, many soldiers returned home early but not all; some families remained behind to rebuild their homes while others headed back out into society once again providing support for their loved ones back home including erection of a German Memorial Park honoring these veterans along Clearwater Boulevard just north of town line on Fort Myers Peninsula where today's Veterans Memorial Museum stands today thanks to donations from many devotees over the years!
Edgewater was founded in 1853 by John and Sarah Edgewater. The town became a ghost town after the construction of the Panama Canal. It was re-founded in 1909 by banker and oilman H.W. Wilson, who named it for his estate on Jacksonville Beach, Florida which he had purchased in 1907. In 1924, the name was changed to Daytona Beach to reflect its location closer to Daytona than Jacksonville.
