In 1821, Seminole Indians burned down theMission San Antonio de la Florida on what is now US-441 north of town. In 1827,Captain John Stoneman's Expedition landed at what is now Edgewater and built Fort Stoneman on present-day Spring Lake Boulevard. A wharf was also constructed here for shipping supplies from Tampa Bay during this time period. In 1829-30 Captain John Moseley's Expedition explored and charted much of southcentral Florida while under command of Rear Admiral David Barronthaler. This expedition would later be immortalized with James Fenimore Cooper’s novel “The Adventures of Hugh Glass” which tells the story of two American officers stranded among the natives during an Indian war at Forcillo Key on Pensacola Beach – one British officer (Hugh Glass) and one American officer (Barronthaler) – until they are saved by some friendly natives and allow them passage back home through their land before they are captured by the Indians! An act to establish a school in Edgewater passed by Congress on November 10th, 1830 . Mrs Anna Maria Keybaum donated land east of present day Lakeshore Drive for use as a public school system meeting house called “The Gables”; it opened its doors on December 3rd 1830 . Classes were taught by private teachers until May 1861 when state legislation provided for open enrollment i n all schools within county lines! administrator was Rev Dr C W Coulter with Mrs Anna Maria Keybaum serving as teacher supervisor! It became known as “Edgewater Male High School” & continued operations until 1954 when it closed due to lack of students/facilities After being vacant for many years it reopened under new management naming it “Florida State High School - Edgewater” & remains operational today

Edgewater is a small town located in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Edgewater was John Witherspoon who settled on the site in 1852. A post office was established at Edgewater in 1854 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The name of the town derived from a nearby body of water which functioned as a landing for fishermen and other travelers heading to Stonington (now part of Longboat Keys) or Jacksonville. A large mill dam was built near present-day Edgewater by Lucas Cummings & Son business partners Samuel Cummings and his son Elijah Cummings in 1892, providing much-needed irrigation to the surrounding farmlands. In 1902, George Washington Tucker donated land to the city of Jacksonville for development into an industrial center with a cotton gin, foundry,shipbuilding and chemical plants; however, these plans were never realized due to financial difficulties. In 1917 Raymond Matson organized a group of investors that purchased Tucker's property and renamed it Edgewater Beach Resort after him as an investment opportunity; however, this venture also failed to materialize due to lack of interest from hoteliers and developers alike. In 1951, several families moved from Forney Heights (northwest corner of Jacksonville) into what would become Edgewater when their homes were destroyed by fire; they are considered founders of the town today. The first store opened at 8th Street and Federal Highway in 1951; it closed within two years because there wasn't enough demand for local products among residents who preferred shopping closer to their homes or businesses within walking distance. Edgewater's growth continued during the late 1950s through 1960s when factories began populating the area with jobs in engineering, manufacturing and shipping operations; however then came some difficult times during that decade including high taxes and economic recession that took its toll on local businesses both nationally and locally; nevertheless, many descendants continue living inside boundaries defined by those early days such as Main Street which runs perpendicular along Federal Highway between 7th Avenue Sqn./Edgewater Mall/Wilburne Drive NE/Upper Peninsula Parkway NW - still one of most popular tourist destinations within town limits today despite some challenges such as increased traffic congestion caused by recent construction projects aroundtown including Interstate 495 freeway expansion project . During the 1920s and 1930s, Edgewater experienced economic prosperity due to its phosphate mines; however, this began to decline after the opening of nearby Collier County's phosphate mine in 1935.
