Edgewater is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first firearms were made in Edgewater by George Washington and James Smith in 1794. Ammunition was also used to shoot game during the early 1800s. In 1824, Colonel John Hays established a store here and began selling ammunition to settlers in the area around Fort Myers on Biscayne Bay. The company continued to exist until 1876 when it became part of Winchester Arms Company Limited. That year saw the birth of "the most famous rifleman in history" when American Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant purchased Winchester rifles from Hays’ company for his forces besieging Mobile, Alabama

The CDP includes the communities of Belle Glade, Bradenton, Coral Gables, Dania Beach, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Hollywood beach. According to the 2000 US Census there were 4,362 people living in Edgewater CDP. The population had increased to 5,849 by the 2010 census. As of July 1st 2020 there are 11 families living in Edgewater increase from 9 households on June 30th 2020 to 12 households with 1 child each

The name is derived from English settlers who named it after Edward Everett Eddy, an American senator and congressman from Massachusetts. The original people of what is now Edgewater were the Timucua Indians. They were displaced by Spanish influences and replaced by Native Americans in the area in the late 16th century. In 1821, Captain John Smith discovered and named a bay on Biscayne Bay after himself; this became known as Smith's Bay (Edgewater). The first permanent European settler in what is now Edgewater was Captn John Auld who came overland from Canada in 1784 with his family and founded Fort Worth on Biscayne Bayou. He named his new settlement Auld's Harbor after himself. In 1827, President James K. Polk granted land to Rafael Rivera for $1 million (the equivalent of $ today) in order to help finance Gulf Coast Railroad construction. Rivera built a large plantation called Terra Cotta Hill which became a major center of African American culture in South Florida during the 19th century. AfterRivera died young in 1851, his widow stayed put and continued to run the plantation until her death in 1902; she bequeathed her estate to Tuskegee Institute which continues to operate it today as one of its primary educational institutions
