Edgewater is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county's third most populous municipality afterMiami and Fort Lauderdale. The name "Edgewater" comes from Edgewater Plantation in Cutler Bay on the shore of Biscayne Bay. In 1871, Henry Flagler purchased land southeast of what is now Edgewater from the Miami Land Company for $500 per acre. Flagler built his mansion there called "The Beach House." He donated it to the city in 1907 as a public park and formally dedicated it on November 20 that year. Flagler had originally intended to name his new town "Cayman", but changed his mind after learning about Cayman Islands governance structures and their lack of representation in U.S. Congress when he became interested in developing this area as a resort town with high-end hotels and other services for visitors operated by locals only. His neighbor across Biscayne Boulevard from him, Hernando de Soto y Ponce, also contributed to early development of Edgewater with land speculation and construction of several homes including De Soto's Mansion which still stands today (early 1900s). Today much of what makes Edgewater unique has roots back before its incorporation into Miami-Dade County – such as its architecture dating back to 1902 (the first edifice erected within present day Edgewater) or its beautiful bay view properties all perched atop Pointe Claire hillock overlooking downtown Miami’s skyline (originally developed as part of Cutler Bay Estate which straddled both Biscayne Boulevard and Figueroa Streets). Today’s residents continue to share some common roots with those who made this community possible – many are descendants of immigrants who arrived here during Prohibition years seeking refuge from organized crime activity that increasingly thrived in post-war America . Edgewater first established himself as a businessman in southwest Florida he chose the name "Edgewater" because that was his childhood home on Jacksonville Bay where he spent summers with his family while attending college at USF (then US Military Academy). It is interesting to note that this choice of name may have been inspired by Ft Myers' own history – which began as an inhospitable outpost on an uninhabited barrier island adjacent to today's city limits – as well as by Jacksonville's many previous owners who had made similar decisions about names for their properties within city limits or outside them altogether: horse pastures, "Fort Meyers," "Titusville."
Edgewater was founded in 1868 by J.F. White, who named it for his father, Elijah White. The town grew rapidly after it was opened to residents of the surrounding area by the railroad in 1876. By 1907, Edgewater had a population of around 1,500 and was noted for its many cultural attractions such as a opera house and art galleries. However, during World War I the town was overwhelmed with refugees from Europe and its population dwindled to around 100 residents by 1920. By the 1930s, Edgewater had recovered somewhat but experienced another decline during the Great Depression which led to its abandonment in 1941.
