During World War II most of what is now downtownDunedin was destroyed by bombing raids from the Japanese Unit 731 forces during their Operation Mochizuki which targeted Allied installations in South Central Tampa Bay Area including Naval Air StationClearwater and other civilian locations adjacent to General MacArthur's headquarters at Camp David during his invasion of Japan on September 2nd 1945 . Most buildings within bomb damage areas were rebuilt or replaced but some suffered heavy losses including two hospitals which were completely destroyed including one which featured over 50 beds inside! One theory suggests this raid may have been retribution for USS Indianapolis attack on Tokyo Bay three days earlier which killed more Japanese civilians than any other act during World War II
