The town had a population of 2,500 by 1880 but growth slowed due to lack of available transportation and other factors such as annexation by neighboring towns until World War II when it experienced rapid growth due to munitions production in nearby Fort Meade Park

Dunedin is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The name "Dunedin" is derived from Dunedin Plantation and was given to the community by General John Dunne who settled in Florida in 1835. In 1840, Captain James Cook named the area after Dunedin, England. The first permanent settler in what would become Dunedin was Wm. J. Sprague, who arrived on an exploration trip through the state in 1841. Sprague built a cabin and Store on what is now Main Street in 1842-43. A post office called Sprague was opened in 1845; it closed in 1893. The first school teacher for Dunedin was Mrs Anna Dickinson Pitts (1847-1921). She taught a one-room schoolhouse until 1850 when she moved to Springville to start her own school there which stayed open until 1906 when it burned down. Mrs Pitts also founded the Ladies Aid Society which still meets monthly today (and has done so since 1903). In 1865, General Andrew Johnson established Fort Myers as an inland military post on Pensacola Bayou north of present day downtown Dunedin
The Dunedin, Florida area was first settled by the Arawak Indians in the early 17th century. They named the settlement Dunedin after their chief, DUNCAN. The town was founded on a small islet near the mouth of the Dunnellon River, about a mile from present-day Dunedin. It grew rapidly in popularity as a shipping and trading center because of its natural resources, including coal and oil. In 1836, it became an incorporated town under the name of Jacksonville. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Jacksonville while Fort Donelson was still standing and destroyed much of the city. Jacksonville surrendered shortly afterward without battle. The town's remaining buildings were burned down in 1865 during Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War. After reconstruction ended, Jacksonville crept back to life as a small farming community until it became an urban center with significant growth in the late 20th century when new highways brought more people and businesses to town. In recent years,Dunedin has seen increasing development around its downtown core as well as significant redevelopment along Highway 1A which bisects the town from east to west
