On October 12, 1916, Dunedin residents Mary and John Hodge organized a citizens' committee to improve the city's infrastructure. This initial effort included purchasing land at Payne and Kingston Streets for the purpose of building a new public works facility. The first building opened in 1917 and was used as the city hall until 1949. In 1936, the city purchased additional land at 333-337 Payne Street for $5,000 to expand its boundaries. This property served as the Dunedin Civic Center from 1936-1949. The current structure was constructed in 1954 by Jens Jensen and is located on Orange Street between King Street and Payne Road.
Duncen, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is adjacent to Jacksonville Beach on the east and Duncansville on the west. The town was founded by Scots settlers in 1834. They named it after Edinburgh, Scotland, where they had been living before moving to Florida. In 1835, Alexander Duncanson started an ironworks in what is now Duncansville and became one of the first investors in America with his brother-in-law John Nicholson. In 1836, he organized a society for raising steamboats and built the first steamboat dock in American history - still extant today as Duncansville Landing Marina. In 1854 James Aiken founded Jaxon Agricultural Company which grew wheat and other crops until it merged into Monsanto Chemical Corporation in 1949. JAXON stands for "John Aiken'sJacksonVILLE". The post office called Duncen from 1854 to 1865;DunCAN from 1865 to 1870;DunCEN from 1870 to 1880;DunCAN again from 1880 to 1890;DunCAN Post Office from 1890 until 1907 (then changed to Dunn Cove). In 1907 it became Dunn Cove Post Office again when that community was annexed into Duncansville. On July 12th 1861 two men - James Henson and David Fenton - swam across Lake Okeechobee on a raft while exploring new territory near what is now Polk County line between Everglades National Park & Kissimmee National Forest boundary
