Dunedin, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 588 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in Dunedin were Spanish traders from Galveston who established a trading post on the St Johns River in 1795. In 1821, the US military burned down the post and all but two of its occupants fled to Canada. A small group of English-speaking families settling in Dunedin after 1833 began developing retail and commercial enterprises within 1 mile (1 km) of their original homes. By 1886, over 100 businesses had been founded in Dunedin; most were descendants of early English-Canadian settlers. In 1917, during World War I, American General John J Pershing ordered all American forces in the area to encamp near downtown Dunedin for six months while they underwent training exercises. As American troops arrived and began their deployment, they discovered that there was no town or garrison available to house them; instead they dispersed into surrounding farms and villages across Polk County. After six months of living among these people, General Pershing decided that Dunedin would be his winter camp for his brigade headquarters when he invaded Cuba as part of Operation Neptune's Spear – an effort to capture Santiago Airfield before it could become available to Francisco Franco's Spanish forces during World War II. On April 6, 1942—the day after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor—General MacArthur announced plans for an amphibious landing on New Guinea at Tulagi Island which would lead to the liberation of Guadalcanal from Japanese control; however due to bad weather conditions only 150 men from Task Force 58 landed on Tulagi Island with only one boatload of supplies ashore because lack of water resources precluded any further landings onto New Guinea until late May 1942 During World War II many buildings still stand including: The old Healy Store building which now houses The University Of Florida’s Graduate School Of Business Administration Museum; The Bank Building which housed First National Banks & Trust Company until 1978; Old Presbyterian Church which still stands today next door to the Healy Store building; And Pee Wee’s Bar & Grill located on State Road 98 just north of Interstate 441 dunedinflorida historical markers

Dunedin, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,851 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Polk County and the largest city in the county. Dunedin was founded on December 14, 1837 by James Sledd and his brother-in-law William Dunlap. The first post office opened in Dunedin on January 6, 1838. In 1848, a sawmill and gristmill were built in Dunedin; they remain standing today as part of the city's infrastructure. On April 3, 1865, General John Bate requested that all Confederate prisoners be transported to Fort Pickens in Mobile Bay for processing before their sentence could be carried out. After Union troops arrived at the fort on April 5th, Confederate POWs began to arrive from throughout Alabama and Georgia. A large number of these men were given work at local mills until their release on July 15th 1865. In 1870, a school was established in Dunedin; it remained open until 1952 when it was closed due to budget cuts by then- Mayor Harry Stamper Jr.. A new high school was built in 1961; it remains open today as Duncan High School. In 1970, an expressway called I-4 was completed through Polk County and went through downtown Dunedin; it has now been replaced by Interstate 4 Busway which runs parallel to US 1 near its original location. The old downtown district has been demolished and replaced with a new development which is home to many popular tourist attractions such as Dole Whip Creamery & Museum (founded in 1978), Discovery Channel's "Masters Of Earth" show set inside an old sugarcane plantation (1993),and two restaurants/bars - one called Gatorade World Sports Bar & Grill (opened 1996)and another called Jaxx steakhouse (opened 1998). Additionally, much importance has been placed upon dunedinsports including baseball diamonds adjacent to Dole Whip Creamery & Museum which have seen use for both summer league games played there during MLB offseason tours as well as college baseball games between UNLV and UCF over Memorial Day weekend annually since 2003 while also hosting various other events throughout year like arts festivals etc... most recently doodlesdays aka day at dunedinspets&justfun had several activities going on there last week some included:adenine tattoos being done for charity(they did about 25 different tattoos for $25 each),marketing prizes for kids' art shows held throughout the weeklong event hosted by dunebuzzkids(which includes painting contests drawing inspiration from Hollywood movies especially those featuring Dune),meetingup with fans of "LOST", playing games outdoors following Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (2006).
