Dunedin, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 743 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1876 by Scots-Irish immigrants as Dunedin on the Dunedin Peninsula. It became an independent municipality in 1907 and a city in 1912. The name "Dunedin" is derived from Irish Gaelic "Dunadh na hÉireann", meaning "place of the Shannon people". A year later it granted extraterritoriality to its citizens so that they could regulate their own affairs without interference from Fort Myers or Tampa Bay. In 1912 the City Council authorized annexation of all but 1/4 of Polk County by Dunedin and its two sister cities – Live Oak and Lakeland – creating what is today Polk County's largest Urban core area by population size unchanged since 1880. This annexation led to increased development within the Municipality boundaries and has resulted in unique community character that continues to this day. Today, Dunedin remains one of South Florida's most vibrant communities with close-knit relationships among its residents and strong economy that supports many businesses located throughout town including five hospitals and six universities (Florida State University; USF; Miami Dade Community College; Stetson University; Daytona Beach Community College).

Dunedin began to be developed as an agricultural town in 1892 when Hernando De Soto discovered Mobile Bay and its fertile soil while exploring southern Florida for Spanish colonists looking for land to settle. The first post office was organized in 1895; Dunedin grew rapidly from its initial population of about 150 people to over 1,000 by 1911 thanks to primary farming activities such as citrus production and cattleraising which supported local mills until World War I when munitions production became important due to increased military activity around Jacksonville. During World War II, Dunedin's status as a Naval air station changed from secondary importance to strategic importance due to its close proximity to Jacksonville Naval Base and its harborability for large naval vessels necessary for logistics operations during the war effort including construction of carriers USS Enterprise (CVN-65) and USS Coral Sea (CVN-7). After the war, much development took place in what would become known as "the new center" with annexation by Jacksonville making it an official city on December 6th 1951 followed by incorporation into state government on January 3rd 1957 with a population size of 10,574
