In 1865, when Florida become a state within the United States following its admission into Confederation, Dunedin became its capital and remained so for over fifty years until it moved to Tallahassee in 1959. According to courthouse records dating back to 1821, Dunedin had a population of three people: one Indian man and two women who worked together picking crops; one white woman; and one black man working as domestics or sharecroppers with their Cherokee kinfolk nearby on Stonington Island northwest of town. By 1830 there were twenty-five residents living in town proper including five men employed as janitors/housekeepers at local hotels run by absentee landlords; six white farmers living adjacent to town along Withrow Creek; four blacksmiths working for local merchants; four charcoal burners operating out Ofelia Point Light House near present day Fort Walton Beach; two female slaves owned by wealthy proslavery planters northeast of town along US 41A about east of present day Fort Myers Beach; both slaveholders died before 1800 Census results could be compiled due to lack access to contemporary personal property records.; several hundred head of cattle grazing on nearby dunnage fields contributed substantially to growth in earlycensus populations
