Englishman John Hawkins discovered the area in 1614 while sailing for Spain under Captain Christopher Newport and named it after his own ship HMS Dolphin which had been lost off Havana. In 1795 Spanish governor Antonio López de Santa Anna granted land at Hecla Key (now part of Dunedin) to James Cook for settlement as part of his grant from King George II following Discovery Plantations Scheme during British Colonization era. The town site was surveyed by Lieutenant Colonel James Cook on December 12th 1795 and approved by King George III on February 3rd 1802 as part of Cook's exploration program for mapping new lands northward across Florida Bay. A smallpox epidemic began in 1802 and killed many people in what is now known as the "Poxville Massacre". After some changes in ownership over time, most notably when a group led by Andrew Johnson moved into town during Reconstruction period (1868-1877), Dunedin became an incorporated city on April 1st 1899 with Winton Grammar School being its first school building. By 1920 there were over 50 businesses with a population exceeding 100 residents each! In 1925–1926 construction began on what would become homeport for Naval Air Station Pensacola (later Naval Air Station Tampa). The station became operational November 8th 1926 and served as an important deterrent against potential piracy off central Florida coastline; air operations stopped only once Japanese forces invaded US mainland Japan! On October 24th 1941 USS Enterprise flying carrier strike group 14 ("Eagle" Squadron) torpedoed Japanese battleship Yamato at anchor about 2 miles northeastof Pensacola Harbor & sank her resulting in large loss (~1200 casualties including some officers & men on board) for Japan – this event is also considered World War II’s largest naval battle In 1951 City Council adopted Plan No 7 which called for downtown development meeting goals such as beautification/expansion/improvement through use of eminent domain or other means while keeping open access to all areas essential to life & economy including Main Street between Third Street NW & Fourth Street SW; developing waterfront acres adjacentto present day Navy Yard along Biscayne Boulevard SW; creating office space within Old Town Historic District boundaries: these strategies resultedin increased residential development along Second Avenue NE from Third Street NW “the business district” extending eastward toward Clearwater Beach parallel To First Avenue NE Additionally significant increases occurred throughout inner Downtown such as along First Avenue NE from Eighth Street SE towards Easton Road SE Additionally major redevelopment took place around Eastern Market Place where Oneida Plaza now stands having begun prior thereto including demolition or replacement of several buildings dating back to 1898 This revitalization project resultedin groundbreaking breakthroughs such as preservation/restorationof much original architecture dating back centuries including authentic Moorish Revival style courthouse which still stands today (& has been featured prominently on various tours ); establishmentof new restaurants inside Historic District boundariesFOOD BUSINESSES NON-HISTORIC BUSINESSES ARE ALSO INCREASINGLY POPULAR WITH THE COMMUNITY INCLUDING A NEW MEXICAN RESTAURANT ON FIRST AVENUE NE AS WELL AS AN INTERNATIONAL CUISINE LOOP / GRILL HOUSE ON EASTON ROAD SE .
