It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. The city has a total area of 26 square miles (68 square kilometers). The first Europeans to visit the region were Spanish missionaries in 1565, who established Mission San Antonio de Briceno across from present-day Dunedin. Afterward, gold seekers began searching for veins of silver and copper in the area and discovered significant deposits of both metals in 1784 when Captain José María Espinosa became the first European to find payable reserves at Grand Key beach on Key Largo Keys; he named the district "Los Caciques" or "The Chiefs." In 1795, Spain acquired control over Cuba from France following their war with France over that country’s possession of Havana; as part of this treaty Spain ceded Cuba including all but two islands north of Haiti: Isla Guadeloupe and Martinique. Consequently, DeSoto’s expedition discovered Pensacola Bay which lay between Hispaniola (now Haiti) and Cuba about southeast of where modern day Dunedin stands today. Dunedin, Florida is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Pasco Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunedin was founded in 1892 by pioneers John and Anna Dunlap. The town name is taken from the Indian word "dun-ah-din," meaning "the place where the wild honeybees are found." The area around Dunedin has been occupied by various cultures for more than 10,000 years. In the 1840s and 1850s Seminole Indians lived hereabouts before being driven out by Spanish colonists in what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1892 Englishman John Dunlap and his wife Anna established a grocery store on Broadway in Dunedin. They named their new town after their daughter Adelaide, born December 21st, 1881, in New Zealand to parents James and Maria (née Stephenson). Anna died young from a fever contracted while helping her husband build the store; John continued to run the business until his death in 1951. After John's death, Anna's brother Harry took over running the store until 1924 when he sold it to J C Burcham who operated it until 1957 when it passed through ownership several times before finally coming into hands of its current owner Donald Trump Jr.'s father Fred Trump Sr., who ran it from 1987 until 2000 as one of two stores owned by Trump Plaza Development LLC which also operated two other stores adjoining Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino complex in downtown Tampa. During this time period major changes were made to both physical plant and management with much emphasis on drainage systems and updated equipment while also maintaining much of older remodeling including extensive use of brick vaults with exposed brick sides dating back to 1886 when Rufus Peake built his first successful dry dock at Tampa Bay; both Store 1 (now North End) facade facing Broadway/Dunedin Causeway with large imported gables typical of early 20th century humidor architecture as well as later development style such as Art Deco features still extant today along Ponce de Leon Street frontage west side), Store 2 (now Main) facade facing Boulevard/Mallory Avenue with smaller imported gables typical of earlier 20th century humidor architecture including many exposedbellows now lost although some visible remains such as tall spindles under door jambs typical feature of earlier Moderne design but no longer extant inside building due to damage sustained during recent fire With rapid growth towards suburban sprawl that began within minutes or hours following election day 2000 vote results announced by then Mayor Bob Buckhorn via satellite link directly into office observation room located on third floor balcony overlooking downtown Tampa Bay - continuing growth throughout first decade post September 11th 2001 periods - Sarasota County began efforts to annex portions of eastern Polk County including much evidence remaining scattered throughout downtownDunedin about potential annexation including numerous pre-existing businesses and residences dating back nearly 120 years all now included within existing boundaries delineated by paint lines subsequent annexation efforts have failed primarily because significant minority populations living near proposed annexation boundaries have consistently opposed any form whatsoever OF residential or commercial development within those communities containing large concentration (>50% black or Hispanic population) dentists offices churches etc remain largely unaffected despite repeated attempts at negotiation without success since these neighborhoods contain some of oldest continuously operating white Protestant institutions in contiguous US Gulf Coast metropolitan areas
In 1836, the Dunedin, Florida community was founded by Captain John H. Dunning and his family. The town was named for their location on the Dunedin River near what is now downtown Dunedin. In 1847, the town's first school opened and it remained in operation until 1912. In that year, a new school building was built and the school operated until 1954. The city of Dunedin was incorporated on March 2, 1906. The city's first mayor was Wm. Muckleman. The current mayor is Democrat Ron Ziegler
