Dunedin is a small city in the Miami-Dade County, Florida metropolitan area. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Dunedin Peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico and banking center for Southwest Florida. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish explorers in 1513 when they sailed past Dunedin Bay. John Smith explored and named it Santa Maria de la Cruz de Dunedin after his patron saint Mary. The Santo Domingo Company built Fort Caroline in 1695 to protect shipping along the mouth of the St Johns River from pirates. In 1824, Jacksonville became an independent county and Dunedin became part of Jacksonville as well. A steamboat landing was made here in 1827 by Major General David Dixon with assistance from Captains Augustus De Witt and Isaac Hull who had landed supplies at Pensacola following their successful piratical expedition against Spanish treasure fleets off Cuba during that year’s war for independence from Spain. During the Second Seminole War (1836-1841), American forces burned down several buildings here including Fort Caroline which served as a military hospital for Confederate troops during that conflict. In 1849, one hundred acres of land comprising what is now downtown Dunedin was donated to town by Elisha Whitehead, founder of Whitehead plantation near present day US Highway 98A north of town limits; this parcel later became known as Parkland Square developmentally speaking). It was not until 1861 when Flagler founded Commission Bluffs Railroad nearby that trade between Jacksonville and Duval County rapidly increased; thereafter many local businesses sprang up serving both areas including grocery stores, barber shops, banks etc.. In 1903 Mayor Fenton Dickson leased 1/2 mile of beach front property adjacent to First Baptist Church for use as a municipally owned park which remains today nucleus of much commercial activity taking place within its boundaries; since then various community events have been hosted there throughout summer months attracting visitors from all over southern Florida! Dixon Boulevard running through downtown provides easy access to most activities being offered herein however some notable exceptions are University Drive which runs perpendicular to I-10 just east thereof providing excellent views intoPanama City’s Negros Island Harbor while State Road 10E provides direct access via SR 10W into downtown Los Angeles Preserve wine country atmosphere without ever leaving Main Street! Downtown's youthful energy gives way more frequently than one might think to authentic midwestern style architecture while blocks away one finds high school graduates mopping floors or driving cabs loading groceries onto their cars! However, during World War II it experienced significant damage from Japanese bombing raids which caused many buildings to collapse including the Cotton Gin Building which still stands today at 5th Street and East Orange Avenue in downtown Dunedin
