Dunedin, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Combined Statistical Area. Founded in 1868 as Dunedin Springs by Scottish pioneers who named it for their home town of Edinburgh and because they thought the naturally occurring spring would provide water for their cattle and sheep, Dunedin quickly grew into a small but popular community with an active business district and several churches. In 1886, when US 1 was created through land east of Dunedin and north of Stonington (now Stonington Beach), parts of Polk County were annexed to Brevard County; including most of what is now Dunedin. In 1907, when US 1 became State Road 7 (SR 7), it connected SR 4 in Putnam County to SR 3 in Brevard County; making Dunedin one of the first incorporated municipalities on State Road 7. By 1912 there were 10 businesses in the commercial district along SR 7 with a population growth rate of over 25%. Businesses included banks, grocery stores, insurance companies and other businesses that supplied goods or services to residents and tourists alike. The new municipality had its own school system which opened on October 15th 1912 with 24 students from 5 different schools located within walking distance from each other providing instruction in reading/writing/math/ science/social studies. At that time only girls could attend public schools so enrollment increased rapidly for girls only classes until finally all public schools were closed by 1938 due to World War II efforts to make room for American military bases throughout Florida In 1938 local citizens petitioned county officials to allow continuation of school day twilight hours until 8:00pm allowing children aged six months old up until eight years old access to education while still being able to work during daytime hours like their parents used to do prior to WWII . A year later on May 14th 1939 the ordinance creating City Of Dunedin was passed by City Council giving local citizens ultimate control over government activities including education which remains today unchanged more than 60 years later
Dunedin, Florida was founded in 1837 by Englishmen as Dunedin Plantation. It was named for the town of Dunedin, New Zealand. The original settlers were Major John A. Dunmore and his family. They arrived on a ship called the "Omaha" and set up a farmstead on what is now State Road 7 in what is now eastern Pinellas County. In 1840, they moved to what is now western Pinellas County and developed the area into a small town which eventually grew to become one of the most populous cities in Florida.
