Doral, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 571,837 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth most populous municipality in Miami-Dade County and the third most populous city east of Interstate 95. Doral is home to Dolphins Stadium, an NFL football stadium which has been used for Super Bowls since 1984 and has hosted other events including the FIBA World Cup and the Daytona 500 auto race. Additionally, it became one of only two cities in America to host both the Women's Open Tennis Championships and the men's PGA Championship consecutively (the other being Augusta, Georgia). Doral was founded on November 4, 1923 by developers Harry Weisberger and Sanford Rosenthal. The original plans were for a community called "Hollywood". In 1926 Doral annexed land from Hollywood Park to form its own municipality. The name "Doral" comes from Spanish meaning "estuary" or "shoreline". The area around what is now Doral was first populated by Native American cultures who hunted small game such as rabbits and squirrels on Ochlockon Key Peninsula before coming into contact with European settlers in 1821 when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto visited this part of South Florida. A wharf was built on present day Doane Street in 1827 by Captain John Biddlehyde for shipping salt water onto Whatcom Island near today's Delray Beach during winter months when ice covered much of Miami-Dade County. In 1892 two brothers named George Vinson developed a citrus plantation known as Vinson Brothers Citrus Growers near what is now Viera Boulevard outside Miracle Mile section of town today known as North Miami Beach - at that time it was just Palm Beach Blvd Eastside within today’s City limits! After years of hard work they achieved their dream to open a store fronting palm trees along Broward Boulevard between University Boulevard & Coconut Creek Road back then it still looked like this photo below taken circa 1915 shows: Today we can see many spots where Streets had once been but sadly due to lack of protection from Hurricanes Irma & Maria many places have suffered damage!!!

The city is named after Doral Beach, Florida which was founded by Japanese American farmers in 1919. The name comes from "doraphobia" – fear of dolphins – and "arella" – white sand beaches – both of which were once common in this region. Doral's history can be traced back to 1892 when two brothers, Edward Pinchbeck and John Hays donated land to build a school and community center near present day Brickell Avenue and NW First Street. In 1916, Doral became a town when it organized as part of South Miami–Dade County along with other towns in that county including PortMiami and Cutler Bay. The first mayor was Wm Kiffin. In 1942, during World War II, Doral became known for its production of aviation gasoline used by military planes flying over Naples Island National Seashore. Because there was no regular gasoline station available close to strategic bomber bases like NAS Miramar on North Bay Street (then called Tamiami Trail), residents had to truck their supplies miles away from their homes for fuel. Later that year, Hurricane Olga made landfall in FL then moved north into USDA-owned Key West before making her way back south through central Floridas where she struck Key Largo on August 29th causing major damage before dissipating over Everglades National Park early September 1st officially ending World War II). In 1948 following riots at University of Miami (UM) student protests against segregated housing patterns Fenton Stokes become Mayor Of Doral becoming one of only three mayors in history to serve two terms consecutively without being impeached or resigning; he held office until his death on October 2nd while still serving as Mayor effective November 3rd through December 15th having been reelected “by acclamation” due to term limits set by then-Govt ordinance limiting mayoral service time To two years From election date(s). He remains one of only four mayors in history to have served more than two terms consecutive non-impeachable terms (the others are Booker T Washington Sr., Harry Truman Jr., Andrew Young). His death left UDM students seeking his successor but no clear frontrunner emerged so UM accepted an offer from Broward County which would give them Fenton’s replacement for another year until November 3rd when term limits were lifted effective again due to Govt Executive Order 9396 however no new mayor materialized so UM reinstated Stokes as Mayor effective January 3rd 1959 . Together with City Manager Harry Coker they led the city through some very tough times such as numerous floods throughout 1960s & 1970s & many NASL soccer games played at Boca Raton Stadium between 1962 & 1966 helped keep local businesses open despite lack or proper funding thru Tax Increment Financing Authority Programs like Home Rule Amendment Act 1976 which repealed state constitutional ban on cities having any say whatsoever overlocal government finances especially taxes; also forced closure/relocation/abandonment/rebuilding efforts during downtown offshoot neighborhood dubbed “Crampton Place” now mostly residential developments east side Airport Boulevard circa 1984 when airport opened providing much needed economic development opportunity nearby although all plans terminated prior thereto because airport property reverted back}{and now all surface water crossings are managed by private entities}. Today’s skyline view looking southeast across FEC River towards Interstate 95 can be seen just past Suncoast Mall onto I-95 about 5 miles south east}
