Doral is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 481,405 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-most populous city in Miami-Dade County and the most populous city inbroward county. The metropolitan area of Doral has a population of 1,563,830 as of 2016. The large Doral airport serves as the primary commercial center for both Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The name "Doral" comes from Spanish meaning "Island of Coral." In 1892 citrus growers organized a club to promote their crops on an isolated island off Palm Beach County. In 1910 developer Simeon Levy bought the island for $8 million and began developing it into one of South Florida's largest cities with its original downtown core still standing today. In 1957 Doral became part of Miami-Dade County when all but four municipalities within that county were annexed into the new county. AsMiami grew more populous and Traffic began clogging up local roads with commuters heading to jobs in Kendall or other communities near South Beach, Levy developed another community on his island which he called Miramar (the word Miramar means "Oasis"). By 1970 Miramar had become one of South Florida's most expensive neighborhoods; however, development there stopped due to problems with air quality caused by manufacturing operations located within walking distance of many homes along North Bay Drive/Key Biscayne Boulevard). In 1990 Levy sold his entire rights interest in Miramar to developer Lourdes Santiago for $275 million – making it one of southpawFlorida's largestever land purchases by a single individual – until then only Cuban expatriates had purchased such significant amounts of property within Miami-Dade County limits.
