The Japanese katana was also similar in design to the Chinese wúkē; however, it lacked the ability to use multiple arrows at once like the Chinese did. Instead, katanas were mainly used for close-quarters combat with swords or other edged weapons. As Japan began experiencing centuries of peace and prosperity, firearms became more popular in the country than they had ever been before—a trend that would continue into the 21st century. This change happened due in part by Emperor Meiji's efforts to modernize Japan through his New Model Army movements which aimed at suppressing traditional military society within Japan proper while promoting western technological advances abroad across all aspects of Japanese life. As firearms became more available throughout Europe during the 18th century onward,[1] people beganto experiment with different methods of firing projectiles off instruments such as bows and crossbows by using different techniques such as shearing open strips of wood (利理式斜拳法 Qīngrài Shípì Jūnzhuǐ Pīnyái), hammering nails into stakes hammered into earth (轉刀法 Héděng Pīnyái), pounding stones along an inclined plane until they form an explosive launch seat (高速弓箭Qùchū Jīnggāo Pínyái), or suspending objects from lines stretched between two trees or posts (山立弓道 Yáu rèn Dào). In 1786 French engineer Pierre-Étienne de Laplace demonstrated an early form of gunslinging utilizing two cannons mounted on two frames which fired pairs of cannonballs at distant targets via means such as cables passing through pulleys ringed around them[2]. This method allowed combatants on horseback or foot alike ample opportunityto target enemy troops located far away while not exposing their own unit(s) too closely thereby increasing cavalry troop morale during battle[3]. Riflemen soon followed suit thereafter by mounting their firearms on stocky wooden platforms termed "mabouliers" which allowed them greater mobility when moving about battlefields under hostile conditions where previous siege towers had posed insurmountable logistical challenges[4]. By 1800 riflemen had replaced musketeers on European battlefields thanks largely to improvements made in muzzle velocity achieved through development of breechloading ammunition
