The area now known as Doral was home to Seminole Indian and African American communities before the area became part of Miami in 1893. In 1896, Doral's first white mayor, J. P. Richardson, delivered the keynote speech at the opening of Booker T Washington University in Overtown. Doral is located on Beach Road between NW 7th Avenue and NW 8th Avenue and on Biscayne Boulevard east of I-95 south of US1. The name "Doral" comes from two creek names: Dora Creek and Donalo Creek (now Donieckee River). The word "doral" means 'shallow beach' or 'shoreline'. It was given to this area by brothers José María and Manuel Armijo who settled in this region in 1835 from Colombia. They named their rancho el dorado because it appeared to them as if there was a bright sandbar near shore that shone brightly when they looked out from their boat while sailing along the coast. After some delay due to lack of available land, President James Kealing signed a bill creating Miami-Dade County on February 9, 1907 using $5 million donated by Andrew Carnegie for this purpose. On October 15th of that year, Doral incorporated as a town with just under 100 residents living in five blocks called Palm Drive SW between NE Second Street and NE Third Street which faced Coconut Grove Cemetery on one side and Driggs Elementary School on the other side across Beach Road from Fort Lauderdale Shipbuilding Company where Mayor Richardson had his office until he moved into his own office in 1909 across Biscayne Boulevard from US1/Route 1 interchange northwest corner with Northwest Eighth Avenue
