In 1909, two brothers named Ernst and Harry Weese donated their land to make way for an amusement park called "Titus". The Weese Park had a roller coaster, water slides and other attractions that drew people from far away to visit. After World War I ended, Titus became defunct because of budgetary problems at the city hall. A group of businessmen named John Ahern bought Titus in 1927 and renamed it "Doral", after their hometown of Darmstadt, Germany where they had been born and raised. In 1933–1934 – during the Great Depression – "Doral" jobless rates were over 20%. In March 1954 when James Worthy became governor of Florida, he announced his intention to build a new state capital on unincorporated land between Miami Beach and Biscayne Bayou east of downtown Fort Lauderdale with plans to lure businesses away from Broward County by offering tax breaks or free land within Doral's borders. This move won him support among business leaders in South Florida who saw as an opportunity to improve their economy while avoiding competition from Fort Lauderdale which was then growing rapidly due to its links with Cuban immigrants working in sugar cane fields nearby. On May 2nd 1953 construction began on Doral Municipal Airport - one of several projects initiated by Worthy during his tenure as governor including plans for Interstate 95 (I-95), Coconut Grove Boulevard (now S Euclid Avenue), Lighthouse Point Drive (now US 395) and Bronzeville Road (now US 1). By 1957 there were more than 50 businesses operating out of Dormant City Airport; more than half were wedding planners/cake decorators employing 350 workers at four cake shops/cupcakes parlors along with three feed stores feeding 6500 dogs/cats/pets daily across 5 acres! Today there are only 12 businesses still located within the historic airport boundaries - six restaurants/bars operated by local scout troop members serving military families stationed nearby throughout January through December; four airplane servicing companies providing hangar space for retired military planes used by charter pilots conducting Trips around South Florida; two General Aviation airports serving general aviation passengers only - one being used primarily as a training ground for future airline pilot cadets undergoing FAA exams; all these operations overseen by Air Traffic Control so no one company has total control over airspace within this urban area stretching from Building #1 all the way downwinds past Little Haiti Cemetery just south of I-95! On May 1, 1926, Fort Lauderdale annexed Doral and made it its own city again; this time the merger lasted until 1990 when both cities reverted to their original county status.
