Destin, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Leon County. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Leon County and home to the University of Southwestern Florida. The community began as a penal colony in 1836 and grew rapidly after it became an official U.S. naval port in 1925. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson on May 14, 1836 as Anegada Penal Colony to accommodate Naval Prisoner No. 4 (Humphrey Bogart) and other prisoners brought over from England during the Seminole Wars. When Wilkinson took office as governor of Florida in 1839, he designated Destin as his capital city because Jacksonville had not yet been established as a full-fledged city. In 1840, Wilkinson also created the first municipal government in Florida with seven wards that included Destin proper and six adjacent settlements: Cedar Key, Coopers Island, Fort Myers Beach, Grosse Pointe Park, Indian Rocks Beach, Live Oak Key and Mulberry Key Village.[2] The first election held under this new system was on November 3rd,[3] when John Hogg won reelection as mayor with 54% of the vote against George Wickersham’s 42%. In 1925 Destin became an official post-war naval port following World War I when it was selected by President Coolidge to serve as one of two ports alongthe East Coast open to American forces engaged in combat abroad[4]. As part of its modernization process which began in 1923–24, the United States Navy constructed three large warehouses next door to what is now USF South Campus while also building several smaller buildings including administration headquarters and student dormitories.[5] These projects were completed within eighteen months time making Destin one of America's most rapidly modernizing cities at that time[6]. By 1930 – less than 10 years after its incorporation – Destin had become known throughout America for its vibrant nightlife scene which attracted many celebrities such as Bing Crosby[7], Harry Belafonte[8], Bob Hope[9], et al.. After world war II ended with Japan's surrender on August 14th 1945,[10] much attention turned towards Drain because he had played an important role therein both militarily and diplomatically[11]. However few people realized until recently just how significant this particular development actually was until researchers stumbled upon some old records that shed light onto both events

Polk, who served as President during the Mexican-American War. It became a major port on the Atlantic Coast and boasted a population of over 120,000 by 1910.
