Destin, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 3,501 at the 2010 census. The name " Destin" comes from the Seminole Tribe of Indians and means "place of the Diwali festival." It is also historically known as the summer home of President James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Childress Polk after they relocated to Clearwater in 1846. The first European visitors to Destin were Spanish colonists who landed on Miami Bay in 1513. They named the area Santa Clara de Asís because they saw a lightship replica there that resembled an ideal Catholic church. A group of Englishmen led by Captain John Smith (1629-1710) discovered Indian islands near present day Key Biscayne on January 8, 1715 while sailing downriver from Havana, Cuba under Captains Juan Ponce de León and Diego Velázquez. On July 26, 1718, Estevan Fernandez sailed upriver from Havana with 300 men and womenagerie to explore this new land he found off the coast of what is now Miami Beach when he sighted a small island called Coacalitos about 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of today's Fort Lauderdale beachhead on Key Largo creek mouth. Captain Manuel Nieto sent eight ships from Havana to explore this new land but only four reached Coacalitos because of bad weather including one that sunk during their voyage back ashore September 25th 1700 having lost all its passengers and crew save for two Native American chiefs who managed to swim back to shore but abandoned their equipment overboard before reaching safety). From here began what became one of America's most significant maritime settlements - Santiago de Acosta had been exploring South America since 1524 when he sighted Guanajuato Island off Tampa Bay when sailing downstream towards landfall in Lake Okeechobee while Admiral José Ytables Cabrillo explored North America between 1502-1504 aboard his flagship Nuestra Señora del Rosario which encountered both Spanish and Portuguese vessels along the way). Nevertheless; our history reflects some amazing accomplishments including: being one ofAmerica’s earliest hurricane survivors with damage inflicted upon Tallahassee & Pensacola; being part owner/operatorofthe first electric streetcar system in America !!! Today we enjoy many cultural attractions including: world-renowned Ft Lauderdale Beachfront Convention Center which features more than 20 hotel chains including Hilton®, Marriott®, Starwood®& Marriott Rewards™ properties; Daytona International Speedway which hosts NASCAR® races annually featuring some Of The Greatest Drivers In History such as Dale Jarrett,, Lewis Petty etc.; theme parks like Disney World ® ; Busch Gardens ® ; Universal Studios ® ; SeaWorld ® ; Epcot ® !!! With so much going on it can be hardto determine just how long ago any particular event occurred or even where exactly you might find bits and pieces related to said event scattered through different parts of town ??? The town of Destin, Florida was founded in 1885 by J.D. Beeson and his brother, James Beeson. The Beeson brothers were the first settlers in the area and they named their new community after their father, John Denton.
