The railway reached Fort Pierce on November 20th 1870 but only transported goods such as lumber because there were no passengers allowed on the railroad at that time due to Ulysses S Grant's proclamation which forbid any military travel within Cuba without prior permission from Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Passenger service resumed on May 5th 1876 when control over the railroad passed from the United States Railway Company to Amtrak Incorporated under charter from New York City Railway & Elevator Company through their subsidiary Chicago Northwestern Terminal Company which leased USRTC trackage east of downtown Miami while USRTC continued operations west of downtown Miami In 1904 Union Carbide bought out Central Dry Mines Corporation who had been mining coal near present day Pompano Beach for over fifty years; this allowed Union Carbide access to an unlimited amount of coal seams in southern Florida On October 1st 1906 Union Carbide merged with Standard Oil Co., making it one large company with monopoly rights to distribute oil products throughout much of South America including Brazil where they now operated two refineries; these refineries were later combined into one larger refinery called Petrobras de Porto Rico which continues today as ChevronTexaco . This merger caused many jobs along with infrastructure improvements including new train tracks and terminals for rail shipment connecting Boca Raton/Fort Myers/Pompano Beach/Miami Dade County with points beyond; this led to increased trade between south Floridas cities and north Floridas city limits Accordingly, before World War I Destin enjoyed high levels of prosperity thanks in part to its position as an important transportation hub linking south Floridawith northern Miami Dade countyand parts of Tampa Bay
