The city was originally a farming community which sprang up around the mouth of an existing stream that connected two other settlements in what is now downtown Destin. After years of growth, development began in earnest in 1916 when James A. Forbes decided to move his family from Ireland to make a new life hereabouts. Forbes had recently been forced out as owner of a large cattle ranch near Tampa and decided he would like some peace and quiet after spending all his money on buying land in Mesquite County. He called together some friends who were also interested in moving to Destin - brothers Harry Wertheimer (the first postmaster) and Sam Geddes - and they bought Lots 1-3 on Bay Street for $1 each from J P Marriott for $10 per acre (about $2 per square foot). The group built their first house on lot 3A within six months with help from local contractor Willis Hoggitt Jr.. In 1928, Forbes donated land off Third Street near downtown for use as a public square where meals could be served prior to live music at the nearby Daytona Beach Speedway. By this time, Destin had developed into one of America's busiest fishing ports with fleets arriving from all over the country looking for cod or catfish! In 1939 Dorney Park became available for purchase by Wade Hampton III who planned to turn it into a major amusement park that would rival Universal Studios Hollywood! However due largely to World War II shortages thereof essential features such as rides were not included until 1948 when construction began on Universal's theme park which eventually became Disney World! This event led directly to another influx of tourists who gave townspeople an opportunityto start businesses such as restaurants, motels, gift shops etcetera which continue present day even during off-peak seasons! One particular aspect which sets Destin apart from other summer communities is that there are no services such as healthcare or water hookups available during these periods; instead residents rely heavily upon emergency vehicles which provide electricity through generators during power outages!

In 1905, a group led by developer Andrew Carnegie bought 1 million acres (4 km2) around present day downtown Destin and began development including building several large hotels and apartments;[5] all Dutch Bros.; retail stores including Kmart/SuperTarget;[6] citrus groves; dairy farms producing milkatoir products like cheese; petroleum production with oil wells drilled near present day Service Road; horses grazing on vast swaths of virgin pine forests dating back to Prehistoric times; as well as plantations housing enslaved Africans who labored under white stewardship until 1865 when they were emancipated
Destin, Florida was founded by the Spanish in 1835. It became a U.S. Territory in 1907 and became an incorporated city in 1932. The population of Destin increased from 3,500 in 1910 to over 45,000 by 1940. The city was named for Captain James A. Destin, who had landed there with his squadron of HMS "Orpheus" during the Spanish-American War of 1898.
