The Deltona Sightseeers Club was founded in 1911 by two brothers, Harry and Willis J. Herrington. The club met at the home of Captain Aloysius Ransom to discuss sights to be seen in the area. The first year they sighted: In 1912, they sighted the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MUM) on a test flight from NAS Pensacola, FL. In 1916 they sighted the USS Arizona during World War I off Tampa Bay. In 1925 they sighted King George V's yacht Britannia while anchored off Fernandina Beach; this was their only opportunity to view a Royal Yacht from another country during their membership. In 1929, members purchased an automatic scopes for $5 which allowed them to see any object within 50 degrees of latitude and longitude at any time of day or night without having to wait for a manual scope! The first electronic scopes were introduced in 1941 when members purchased an ASV-4D Automatic Scope from Bendix Corporation for $145.00 It was the first electronic scope calibrated with a digital controller that could be used with either manual or electronic sighting devices. By 1951, automatic scoped telescopes had become standard equipment on most North American submarines and merchant vessels operating out of waters adjacent to Florida along side Sarasota Bay
Deltona is a city in Duval County, Florida. The population was 21,811 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Duval County and it is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settlers to Deltona were three brothers who founded what is now known as United States Steel here in 1892. The city was incorporated on May 15, 1898. At the time it had a population of 3,000 people and it grew rapidly with the opening of several steel mills over the years including Eastern Alloys (now ArcelorMittal) and Gulf Metallurgical Works (now Heidenreich Metals). In 1954, United States Steel shut down its operations in Deltona after 38 years of production; however, heavy industry did not go away entirely as other companies such as Penske Corporation moved into town during this time. In fact, Penske even built an outdoor arena which still stands today – Penske Stadium – within Deltona’s limits! Today, there are many businesses that have been established within Deltona over the years: casino gambling being one example. The airport has also seen some growth recently with new facilities being constructed nearby for both passenger and cargo services.

In 1930, Deltona was incorporated as a city. In 1959, the city of Daytona Beach merged with Deltona, and the former city of Daytona Beach was annexed into Deltona.
