The name "Deltona" comes from the Seminole word "Daltona," which means place where there are cotton fields and palm trees. The first white person to settle in this area was Captain John A. Delonia, who built a cabin on what is now State Road 10 in 1837. In 1851, the town was founded by Judge George Prentice and Dr. James Bigham as a result of an act of Congress which authorized the erection of public buildings within five miles of any capital city or fortieth mile of any river on US Highway 1. By 1875, Deltona had become one of Jacksonville's most important business communities with its own post office, schoolhouse and several businesses including two grocery stores and a printing press. In 1904, the racehorse track known as 'the Palouse' opened along SR 10 near present-day State Road 611 (now Donahue Boulevard). The track became one of Jacksonville's most popular tourist attractions for many years until it closed in 1984 due to deterioration from use. In 1964, Mayor Alvin Cope presented plans for development around 'the Palouse.' This proposal called for construction of up to fifty thousand square feet (25 m2)of retail space on five acres (20 ha) east of SR 10 between Old Cutler Rd./State Road 601 (now Donahue Boulevard) and FM 1514/SR 611 (now Donahue Boulevard). After much debate among residents about whether such development would be compatible with their traditional lifestyle or createToo much noise and traffic downtown, no decisions were made about developing 'the Palouse.' However, by 1970 over 150 businesses were operating in Deltona with approximately 2 million visitors each year; making it oneof Jacksonville's most visited cities during that time period! In early 2006 plans were announced for another large project adjacent to 'the Palouse': an $85 million mixed-use redevelopment called Park Plaza that would include offices, residential units and a commercial district overlooking Interstate 495 outside of Jacksonville proper! After much opposition from nearby homeowners who did not want their property annexed into the new park plaza developments - some calling it Lake Landmark - developers ultimately approved final zoning changes that allowed for extensive growth within city limits withoutposal to those living closeby! He was also influential within Republican Party circles when he became governor of Georgia in 1925. The white farmers who purchased land around Deltona started farming right away because it was available for purchase at low prices due to World War I restrictions on agriculture caused by new currency regulations introduced by President Wilson himself. This allowed for largescale crop production without having to worry about pests or disease, which allowed for rapid growth within Deltona from its humble beginnings as a farming community.
